The Garden Fence - help and support in tough times

It's probably best you're not here yet, at 6.30 this morning apparent temperature was 33 degrees. It's predicted to get up to 38 at least today. I daren't go out to get the newspaper for fear of bursting into flames in the driveway.
softstuff, are you east or west, south or north? My family are near perth. How on earth do you cope with the heat? I flake out at 25
monnagran, you bounced back. I am so happy, you have wonderful cheerful vibes and it is infectious0 -

The other side, in South East Queensland. I met a friend online from Perth, who curiously enough was born and lived just a street away from my previous home in England. And the simple answer is I don't cope with the heat, I avoid it! We just had ducted air conditioning installed, which has been running on and off all day. Even with that though I've done nothing constructive today. On slightly cooler days you do any garden work at 6am or 6pm, just before dark and still sweat it up (covered from head to foot to avoid toasting my pasty whiteness). Shopping centres are covered and air conditioned as are most other shops, cars, offices etc. If we go for a walk, it's at sunset.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
That was interesting softstuff, it really is a very small world. So really you cope like they do in the very hot continental countries
Don`t shoot me down please, anyone, I do believe that we are getting very wild sudden jetstream swings due to mini ice age and solar changes. This may well involve hugely high temperatures, even in the uk, which is currently kept moderate by various means. Part of my shtf preps are in place to cope with this very high temperature, in many ways extreme cold is easier to deal with. If we reach the 35+ then I won`t be going anywhere and I`ll be sitting in a darkened room, eating from my stores. I dread the heat, much more than extreme cold

Woop Woop Monna -:T:T:T
Well done you - a group to share interests and a worthy organisation that's very close to my heart to volunteer for. I'll definitely come looking for you when I sail over in the summer!
Hester - bet you were always in the back row at school lol!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
OK silvasava, if you are ever shipwrecked just outside Bembridge look out for a short dumpy figure in oilskins and sou'wester holding out a blanket to wrap you in. I'll get some brandy in just in case.
Softstuff: rather you than me. Like Kittie, anything over 25C sees me reduced to a grease spot on the floor.
Well in this green and pleasant land the rain has stopped at last and there are 2 manky
bananas waiting to be turned into choc chip and banana muffins, a load of bed linen to be washed and dried, my room to be sorted out yet again (I.e. swapping round the piles of clothes, shoes, papers and general detritus I don't know what to do with) and a living room floor covered in toys to be reduced to some sort of order before DIIL comes home from work.
Query: do children today really need the bushels of toys that are showered upon them?
I am appalled by the amount of stuff deemed necessary to entertain Little Madam. She's three for goodness sake.
I know, I know, I'm hopelessly old fashioned, but not old fashioned enough to walk away from the challenge. I tidy up toys with a large black bin bag sneakily by my side. Only when she is at nursery and parents are at work, naturally.

If you would like to prep for heat there's a number of things they have here as a matter of course. Roof insulation, whirlybirds in the roof, tinted windows, increased eaves on houses (or awnings on existing windows), planting to provide shade, screening in front of windows, fans on ceilings. Most of these have been pretty standard here for some time. Of course there is air conditioning, but at a price and continued running cost over and above most of these. If you were to build a house from new, you couldn't go far wrong with a queenslander raised off the ground. Suitably footed, it'd be good for flooding too.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
TBH Monna, I would store half of my boys' toys out of sight for a few months and then swap them over. They would fall on the rediscovered toys with unlimited joy, and play "properly" for ages.

Monna - have you ever known a sailor without emergency medicinal alcohol on board??? Will almost definitely be doing a run to Bembridge at some time so meet you in the Pilot!
Sunny here but cold. Was a good girl and went to the gym with my friend this morning. Did struggle a bit as I've got the last knockings of the lurgy hanging about. Decided to take advantage of the weather and did the second prune of the Wisteria at the back of the house. Had it about 10 years now & its beginning to look the way I want at last! Planning my veg plot planting - got some seed spuds in Poundland so they're sprouting on thewindowsil - that's as far as I've got.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
omg I have just made a hare. I thought I would try a completely new craft, needle felting, never done it before. Its fab, relaxing and something to do on my knee. I have seen needle felted things at a craft show but they always looked so complicated. Better than knitting, no stitches to drop and you can add and take fleece away to make the shape. Just involves stabbing a thin felting needle into a blob of fleece sitting on a thick sponge. What amazing present potential
key rings, brooches etc
My hare is like the one a few images down
