The Garden Fence - help and support in tough times

Come on fuddle. You should be asleep.
Just had a tussle with my tablet who thinks that you should be called 'cuddle'. Not a bad name for you actually.
You are very kind to an ancient crone who needs a bit of ego-massaging. The guilt came about when i saw how her little face dropped when LM realised that the exciting bit was all over. Still, there will be other days and she did enjjoy two of the biscuits with a drink.
I am full of admiration for your start on the veggie growing. DIL has said that she will turn the garden over to me now that she is working but I'm not that thrilled. ATM the garden is full of shrubs, cordon fruit trees and plastic Wendy houses, slides, and trundle cars. Not to mention the detritus connected to a huge but rather rusty BBQ. My enthusiasm for gardening is tepid at the most.
Now to try to nod off for a bit longer.

Morning all - Monna & Fuddle - hope you both get a bit of a lie in this morning after your nocturnal posts! I was woken by furbaby mewing & scratching at 5am - DH had accidentally shut her in the bathroom - needless to say he slept through it.
Out most of today - volunteer job this morning - then some baking & my yoga session this evening.
Have a good day all xSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
I am inspired to take the smoked mackerel packet out of the freezer and use it for tonight's dinner. Thank you Kittie for reminding me to use foil, it will contain the smell a bit.
On this note, how long does fish last in the freezer? I bought some fresh salmon before Christmas and put it in the freezer, but never got around to cooking it. Now, tomorrow we are out for dinner with DD then Saturday we are off for a few days. I will be back after Lent has started, when I won't be cooking any animal food. Will the salmon keep until after Easter, or should I just give it to my neighbour, so it does not go wasted? Thank you. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I have realised suddenly that I have two stone to lose, if I want to stay healthy approaching my 70s. Am going the ayurvedic way, pretty well based on this
http://blog.maharishi.co.uk/ayurveda-for-the-over-50s/
and have cleared the top of my rebounder, which became a dumping place. It is on the landing and I can easily use it daily, doesn`t hurt any joint either
So at last I can stop thinking cold salads, yay, it has been an effort to stuff salad leaves into me during the winter season. Soups and cooked veg here I come, no potatoes just now, replaced with the likes of cauliflower and carrots. I want to use up the mackerel as it is an oily fish and anyway I know is good for me, so mackerel again today, this time in non stick foil and in my remoska. I wouldn`t like it without gooseberries tbh
ok back to it, cleaning a bit and more of not rushing around, hopefully not procrastinating too much0 -
Morning Fencers . Have only read back a page and a half . This post viral thingy is the gift that keeps on giving . Each time I think I'm better back it comes .
Laughing at Monna ordering Fuddle back to sleep . Pot , kettle black ?
Not a fan of fish but I do make myself eat unsmoked , undyed scottish haddock as that's the only one I enjoy .
Well done on the growing Fuddle . I usually plant my garlic in february but outdoors still resembles a paddy field .
Hope your get your space at the craft group Monna .
Kittie The hare is lovely . Love the idea of the new thread . I know we have mmm which I follow but I think your idea will sit alongside it .
Well brain has frozen again . You have no idea how many times I have gone back and made corrections to this post .
Take care all and stay warm if possible .

I did go back to bed at 5... struggled to get up again for the school run. That'll teach me!
kittie I've just had a quick look at ayurveda as have not heard of it before. Seems like a topic that I could very well go along with so will be researching in the coming days. Thanks for sharing as always.
I will, will, will get round to needle felting one day. I'm more interested in flat working though although the cuties I've seen in 3D do make me smile. I've seen some beautiful works for wollen wear in the past.
Speaking of which, I have temporarily put down the knitting needles in favour of my crochet hook. I need to not concentrate for a while  :rotfl: half way through a long line cardi for my bit self... the beauty of 8mm and chunky wool means it works up fast. The only problem is I'm running out of wool now and won't buy any more till my wool budget resets 15th when DH is paid. Damn you disciplined and somewhat stubborn woman!:rotfl:0 -
Kittie/Fuddle - have a look on the on demand programmes on Channel 4. They've done some programmes on 'how to lose weight well' which talks about different diets and how they work. It's been very interesting.0

I like the ethos kittie but seems its high on grains and dairy. I would struggle.
I saw a bit of those programmes greenbee. I thought putting tumeric in with lemon water was great. Still learning about the benefits of turmeric so my ears pricked up on that one. I haven't seen the others so will hunt 'em out if they are interesting.0 -
fuddle it is a very complicated system of medicine. I have worked out my doshas and was primarily pitta/kapha but at my age now and in my circumstance vata is the most influential, when I need rest and warming foods and some sweetness. Certain foods will unbalance me just now, particularly raw and cooling foods. Lunch needs to be the biggest meal for me and I had that mackerel with parsnip (sweet) cauliflower and some shredded sprout top, teatime will be the soup that I have just finished, sweet potato, carrot, squash and I popped in a little onion and celery. I added cardomon, cumin and ginger and that gives me the warming spices that will also help to balance me. I could add rice or wheat but don`t need them. I do well on nuts, so am having almond milk and am using the ghee that I already have in the fridge, to saute the onion. It is massively complicated, I remember trying to understand it 20 years ago when I was more pitta . I seem to be understanding it now, it seems to be falling into place, at the right time tbh. There are some very good tick charts in that book, if you can borrow it from a library then you will be able to work out your doshas and go from there
I bought a fair bit of ginger last week and froze it in chunks today, peeled and ready
Re sewing now, that mojo vanished so I just hopped along a little bit this morning. The trousers that I need to take up are rust cotton twill and had a 6" hem. I unpicked the hem and washed them in the machine last night, cotton has a habit of shrinking. I measured an inside leg of 25.5 and they are tacked up. That is all I am doing today. 25.5, I used to be 27, so prepare to shrink when you get older  fact of life
I meant to ask if anyone has done any TM, transcendental meditation and if so how is it different to meditation?0 -
Many years back I got introduced to Transcendental Meditation. I cant say I stuck at it for long - ahem. Basically - I'm inclined to think its just a (very) expensive course on meditation and you are given your own personal mantra (though - as its supposed to remain secret - then there is no knowing if anyone else has been given the same one).
Probably as well to stick to the conventional and MUCH cheaper meditation - which I will get back to one day. Its on the To Do list.
With vegetables - if not eating that many raw ones, then there are various ways becoming known of cooking them these days. I'm a fan of roasted vegetables myself and have been doing a bit of experimenting with grilled vegetables. Cauliflower is really rather nice if cut into cauliflower "steaks" and roasted with suitable flavourings.
Vegetables are so much more interesting than when they were just (over) boiled. Then one can steam them and put a nice sauce with them (eg tahini sauce - for which any excuse is a good excuse in my book:)).
I've had to take up jeans a couple of times over recent years - darn it - as I wear them the longest possible length I can without them rubbing on the ground. That has resulted in all the jeans I have been wearing recently getting frayed at the bottom - as they have started rubbing on the ground. Bit unsure as to how to proceed on the length of them now - as I don't like jeans that are at anklebone distance from the ground.0
