The Garden Fence - help and support in tough times

We had a humdinger of a storm again this afternoon, stopped me doing my garden but I have trimmed 95% of the front hedge and strimmed the lawn within an hour before it started. The back garden is almost done but I have a big problem. 40 sacks of garden grass and similar stuff. I cannot think of a way to get rid of it!!
I've looked online and I suspect those companies will charge a lot. And the local freesheet seems short on people with vans to contact. If anyone has any suggestions I'd welcome them."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Pops ...don't know where in co Durham you are but have a look into the brown bin ..its on the gov website just put your postcode in to check your area ...it does cost £20 for weekly / or two weeks collections. And runs from may ? Till end of sept ...may be a lot cheaper than getting a man with a van and you have it all over the summer ,...£223/ £250 GC0

Thanks Burtha,
I think I'm covered by that scheme(I've asked for a bin 5 times)and so far nothing has happened. Initially, I think its £50 for a three year period. But 40+bags will take ages to clear and will be expensive to get rid of :(I'm in the Ferryhill/Bishop Auckland/Newton Aycliffe area.
On the plus side only two lawns to strim, 5% of a hedge to trim, a lawn to sow, weed killer to put down and a fence to paint between now and October and the hard work is done and all by me!:D
Fence/sowing of lawn/can be done at leisure. At a push even next year. But the hedge/and strimming of lawn will done by Wednesday(weather permitting)possibly as early as today.
TBH as the rubbish is bagged that can probably be delayed, just I would like to see it gone."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Pops The council should be able to arrange to collect it all for you as a one-off, though there will obviously be a charge.
Our own local council is planning to start charging for regular garden waste collection later this year. At the moment we put food waste (wrapped/bagged) and garden waste into the same bin, which is emptied every week. They plan to give everyone a big caddy for food waste which will be emptied every week, and a huge brown bin for garden waste, which will be emptied fortnightly.
It's going to cost £33 a year, with a discount this year if you pay by the end of July.0 -
Excitement abounds...as its a nice day I am also going re-wash some clothes that are dirty through gardening and...use my newly erected washing line, extending clothes pole, pegs and peg bag:p
Probably around teatime into the early evening and there does seem to be a breeze.
Thanks Ivyleaf.
I've already been out and moved rubbish to please my awkward neighbour(even though its in my garden)bagged more stuff. Trimming the hedge and strimming of the last two lawns(but they are now merged as one)when I come home around teatime.
I have to be out by midday(having a game of bingo in the afternoon)with friends, its more like a little social club(tea and scones)a chat.
Don't want to overdo it with the Dr's surgery tomorrow for bloods and then the H. appointment on Thursday. Do all this today and I can take it easy."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Meh! I gave in. Its been raining. Putting plans off for 17hrs, the delay won't make any difference. I'll do it after my Dr's surgery in the morning seeing I am up so early. I can rest again afterwards and the same is true of Wednesday(the buffer between the surgery and hospital)
I'm going to listen to the radio and have a ham salad perhaps some fruit.
I am being accompanied by young blackbirds who are not frightened of coming very close. When I was moving the bags this morning I had a female virtually by my side:)
Soon thinking of having some bird feeders again;)
Not looking forward to the budget on Wednesday which I fear will affect many many people...whether working(low pay)unemployed, ill/disabled/carers. I rarely fear or get scared of plans but this time I do think it really will hurt. That's all I'll say."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Pops ..I think its £20 per year or 3 years at a discounted price of £50 ....keep asking them ,I am sure they will want the money ! Lol ...
Our garden is full of birds but we are out in the sticks a bit ...good for the views but not so much for the local services ,but grew up here so think its where we will stay ....use fat balls plus seeds for our birds ,fat ball a lot less messy and work out about 48 for £4 ....
Have friends up in bishop ( about 40 minute car ride from here)
Hope your lucky at bingo£223/ £250 GC0 -
Pops - you're going great guns with your gardening. What with the bees and a friendly blackbird it looks as if your garden could be a little haven for wildlife if you start feeding them and provide water (most important!)
I've been pottering in the garden but did pick about a pound of blackcurrants. I sat in the sunshine topping & tailing them accompanied by our little robin pecking between the slabs He/she was about a foot away from me at times & sometimes we get a pair of goldfinches drinking from the birdbath - lovely.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Thanks all...I was really slow today...used a taxi to the Dr's for my bloods(she's done every test for the Consultant on Thursday)and as I told her about the blip regarding concern that I had diabetes last time, she's taken a test for that. So he'll have all the information he needs.
Coming home I had to keep stopping, sitting down, took ages to get home(only a couple of streets)Still plan to finish the hedge this afternoon. The little that needs doing is annoying me. I want it finished now. The lawns probably tomorrow. I'll do the wash today though.
Bit cooler today, no rain as yet, a little bit of a breeze always good for drying clothes on a washing line.
Bargain of the day/week(thanks to the charity shop)9 shirts(long and short sleeved)for £8.91 and thanks to Aldi a honeydew melon for 59p."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Pops, it's 6 bags for £10 for a bulky waste collection, if you get the wheely bin liners you can fit a few standard sized black bags in to those.
The bulk rubbish guys took mine without a quibble when I tried that trick, as I said to you.
I reckon you could probably get 40 into 12 bags and get it all shifted for £20. Nobody will do it cheaper than that.
