I've never looked at my post count, I talk a LOT though I know that! Burtha we're the same here, fire been out since Sat and we're starting to feel cold at night and early mornings. Plus you don't half miss the constant hot water and nice deep baths every night.0

Got the pm Burtha - thank you. DH is going for a run with his mates on the trike this morning. I've got some housewifey things to do. Very hot here again today with not a breath of wind so will not be venturing far. First job will be sitting in the shade topping and tailing blackcurrants - it's a hard lifeSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

We managed to sleep fairly well with the fan on all night. I washed a couple of sheets yesterday evening so they're on the line atm.0

The 'What are you making for dinner today' thread seems to be missing too, anyone spot any others that have gone awol?[/QUOTE]
That would explain such a huge loss of my posts (nearly 200 of them!) in one fell swoop as I posted a lot in there. It is strange though why delete that thread..I for one enjoyed having a nose at what people were having for dinner!

FairyP, lucky, lucky you if that is a crab apple tree. I think they are beautiful and if you get a good crop, crab apple jelly is delicate deliciousness in a jar. Hope you get the fridge situation sorted soon. This is no weather in which to be friendless. Oh thank you tablet, FRIDGELESS, poppet, FRIDGELESS.
I managed to retrieve my summer clothes on Sunday. Unfortunately most of them are too big now. What do I mean, 'unfortunately?' I am thrilled to bits really if rather devoid of clothing. The tops don't matter if they are on the large side but the bottoms look rather too much like clown's trousers for my liking. I don't think that the IOW is quite ready for the vision of Monna wearing just knickers and a T-shirt so I must have a rummage in the CS.
Pickle surveyed my pile of discarded clothing and asked where my shorts were. I explained that I didn't have legs designed for shorts. She hitched up my trouser leg and said that she saw what I meant.
Isn't she a treasure?
We had another interesting discussion while I anointed her bites with anti-histamine cream
Pickle. Why don't you get bites, Monna?
Monna. It could be because I don't go to Nursery and play on the grass.
Pickle. (stroking my arm thoughtfully.) Or it could be because you have very old skin.
As I said, a veritable treasure.
Well, I must get this ancient carcass covered with its old skin up on to its fat legs and back to sorting stuff out for the CS.
Some of the items are going to have to be ironed.

Good job I finished my my coffee! She is gorgeous. I'm surprised DGS did not ask me why I did not get bites as his mum was covered in them.
DD makes everyone get in the flat quickly before any mossies get in. Apparently she had been on about it for weeks. We actually caught one coming out of the lift. I know why I never got any, I kept my door shut to keep DGS out. Both his parents being in their late 40s he would consider they have very old skin.
I would not bother ironing anything the CS will steam them anyway.
Well we have a lovely knew front door with numbers already on and a knocker. I won't have any problems getting insurance now. Some will not insure you if you don't have the doors with 5 bolts built in.
Glad you are settling in OK FPK. I hope you are soon straight. How dreadful to be fridgeless in this weather. If you need a new fridge try AO.com They will probably be able to deliver the same day as they are here in Bolton. They are very reasonable too and offer a good service.0 -
Afternoon all,
I've treated myself to some M&S salads for lunch and I've got a fresh bag of ice for my drinks this afternoon.
Oh Monna. Perhaps if she isn't a professional negotiator Pickle will do standup. :rotfl: As for friendless/fridgeless, I never tire of your tablets's take on the world.
According to the woodland trust, it isn't a crabapple Monna--it was jelly I was hoping for, so it must be some other sort. The leaves are too pointed and not downy. There isn't much fruit on it--I don't think there is anything nearby to pollinate, although there are an abundance of bees around a large bush with small pink flowers that I also can't identify. I'm with Nursemaggie, anything going to the CS will be steamed (and often piled in a back room for awhile) so I wouldn't bother ironing.
Greenbee, the other might be a cherry although the berries are very small and all single. I'm rubbish with trees. I'll have to get photos.
Nursemaggie, I'm glad you've got a new door--I know what you mean about the locks. This particular estate agent requires proof of our contents insurance (including accidental cover for landlords things!) before moving in. They acted shocked when OH asked for details of the windows, doors, roof etc. In the end he never got a response and so put the worst thing down for everything. We refused to buy from the estate agent's 'partner' company. We carry contents insurance anyway, but I don't think it is right for the estate agent to require it and then push their company onto tenants. Thanks for the AO recommendation. Fortunately the fridge is the landlord's responsibility, but unfortunately this means the timetable is s l o w. We're getting measured for the new one (it is integrated) tomorrow. I cannot fathom why the repairman did not measure when he came out yesterday to determine what was wrong with it, but he did not. Perhaps he gets a new call-out fee. Ah well. I'm making do with a cool bag and ice for drinks. We may go on a foray for a small cooler when OH gets home, I've checked all the small local shops so it might be a job for the car this evening.0 -
FPK that's why we turned down a house with a fridge, freezer and washing machine. We did not want to have to wait weeks for essentials. I remember how my mother struggled in summer when I was a child. No one had fridges then.0

nursemaggie, my parents got their first fridge in 1960 and they were thrilled. I had been married 2 years before I got my first fridge and it was second hand. Cost me £10, that was 2 weeks housekeeping money but worth every bit of hard scrimping that I had done.
Do you remember trying to stop the milk going off by standing it in cold water, covered by a flowerpot.

No Monna my mum put it in cold water on the floor of the cold pantry (quarry tiled) with a wet cloth over it. She changed the water about every two hours.
She was very much into getting everything from the co-op but she would not get milk from the co-op because the Co-op milkman always left it in the sun. In hot weather ours would bring it round the back.
Mums Divi would pay for a new winter coat for my brother, my mum and me every year and she also got some other things too. My first job was in the offices of the Co-op, I used to work out the profit from each branch. We used to have to man the office for paying out Divi, there would be queues of nearly a mile long for the Autumn one.
I can still remember her co-op number from before I was 13 as it changed when we moved to York. I can't remember the York one or the one I had after I started work. Now it costs nearly twice as much as supermarkets to shop there and you get no more than a loyalty card.
I think it was about 1966 my mum got a fridge.0
