Awww really - and are you a single 40 year old woman who's past her sell by date with useless qualifications and an elderly mother to look after? Nope, didn't think so. Also, if you are buying and selling on ebay to make a profit that's a job - hope you've informed the correct tax authorities.

    You're 40, not 80!

Wow really? Got any suggestions? That are free? My closest town/industrial area is 12 miles away (oh and that historically has the same issue - poor wages, high cost housing - I know because I worked there for years).
I live in the only private house on a council estate. What do you think they do for a living?

If you give us more details perhaps people could offer suggestions. The first thing you need to do though is get that chip off your shoulder.
  • Hi
Can you or your mum claim carers/attendance allowance ?

I'm sorry you feel I have a chip on my shoulder but people are very quick to assume all kinds of things about someone when they don't have all the facts. You don't know me, you don't know my situation at all so why write a reply with no basis in fact. It's not helpful. I, am strangely not an idiot, I know my situation, I know how I feel about it. I'm certainly not going to write you my CV, past qualifications, job prospects in detail. I told you my situation in my original post. What I wanted to know was whether the council have any genuine right to question how I run my business and whether there was anything I could do about it. Please don't assume I'm stupid or a benefits scrounger just because I'm self employed with a low income. I know the score....

No - not being able to travel to a job is not the problem. The entire County I live in has incredibly poor wages and ridiculously high housing costs. So are you suggesting I work for National Minimum Wage and live in a shed perhaps? And of course, the cost of the car would have to come out of that NMW too.

No, I suggest you commute, which means living exactly where you are and travelling to work each day. You can do the ebay stuff in your spare time...

And as I explained NMW doesn't cut it. £860 a month income with rent of £600 - doesn't leave a lot....

Why would you question the reasons for your LA asking for your income details ? They're paying you HB, what is there to object to ? Do you really think that they would ask if they weren't allowed to ? Do you think it's just some nosey parker at the council ?

If someone would like to give me free money, i'll tell them everything !

I'm a single parent, work full time and travel 18 miles each way to work. And i'm much older than you OP. I'm nowhere near past my sell by date.

According to HB, what you *earn* now doesn't either!

Oh and I'm older than you also! No excuse...
