Limp Mode?

The way I see it you have two options:

    1. Put the car into a reputable garage and let them do their thing. Hopefully they'll do what's necessary and you'll pay accordingly.

    2. Try the cheaper stuff first like using a turbo cleaner. Search for Innotec turbo cleaner. Have u gone out for a really long drive keeping the revs high to get some real heat into the turbo? I know u get the limp mode at high revs but if u take it easy and build up without flooring it quickly you should be able to make progress without inducing limp mode. If you can get the car running hot and get to a point where it doesn't go into limp mode then go wild and give it a proper thrashing preferably up long inclines as this will keep the turbo fully loaded and have the best chance of blowing the carbon off the variable vane mechanism.

My advice is based upon your car having the same problem as mine but of course there is a chance that the cause of the same symptoms is different. However, I think getting the turbo hot through driving or using a turbo cleaner are both cheap things to try first.

Because cleaning's a hit or miss - some garages would have had bad experiences some good. If paying for somebody else to do it then it is a financial risk.

You really need a proper diagnostic to determine whether it's a good risk to take or not. If its just the actuator then it's a reasonably cheap fix, where turbo may well be well and truly worth the risk.

I put some redex diesal cleaner in today and went for a 40 mile drive. I could not cause the car to go into limp mode. Usually it was easy - just get to 3500 revs. I am wandering if it is sorted. Seems a bit too good to be true.
  • Hi,

I recognise your problem from the previous car I had a 2010 ford focus 1.6 and it turned out to be both the dpf and the egr. So i got a company in the midlands to remove both. I sold the car to a friend a few months after and there has been no problems with it since. You can find more info on dpf filters on www-dpffilter-ie

How much did you spend in repairs?
  • Different vehicle but my Mercedes Vito van kept going into limp mode, turned out the catalytic converter was all clogged up, new cat and all is fine.

That's good to hear. Do that regularly and you should give your tdi a good chance to keep free of limp mode.

A massive amount of vehicles (all makes) are going into limp mode and loads of different causes and solutions but none definitive.
Tried a turbo cleaner on daughters Golf, no change.
  • Hi, The total cost for the whole job was €450 and was done by MFK auto care. Google them very happy with the service.
