My mum used to use hers to spin her knickers after hand washing when she was on their caravanning holidays!!

Carol, your Mum sounds like a woman after my own heart :rotfl:

I reinvented mine when I decided it was taking up too much cupboard space and I used it on cleaned paintbrushes to remove as much water as possible before storing - it eventually got binned, but it had a second life! That came from IKEA too!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • I use to do the tea towel thing until I bought a salad spinner at a jumble sale.

Yes, it takes up space, but I keep it along with all my mixing bowls, etc. which are also a pain to store.

Yes, it's another thing to wash and I hate washing up especially as we haven't saved up for a dishwasher yet.

But having said all that, I reckon they're fantastic. I buy a iceberg lettuce, smash its core out (never cut it), then wash and spin it and keep it the fridge for use when required. Yes, it does take up quite a lot of space in the fridge, but at least I'm not eating salad out of those artificial atmosphere bags which can give you listeria if not properly washed, not good for a pregnant woman as I am.

So I'd say get one, but ofcourse in true MSE spirit, buy it from a charity shop or jumble sale.

I got mine from a pound shop.

It's fantastic. I cut my lettuce, pop in into the inner sieve part, and wash it in that. Then spin it, and whats not eaten gets the lid put on and put in the fridge. Much better than those 'ready' bags that need washing anyway.

The inner part also doubles as a sieve when necessary for pasta or potatoes (not rice, as it would fall through)

it only needs rinsing afterwards too, so hardly any washing up.

I am, however tempted by the linked one that cuts too. Or I'm sure I've seen a lakeland one that peels potatoes too. Or did I dream that part up?

    Hi

I have to say that I bought one recently after wanting one for ages and it is great, easy to use, I store mine inside my salad bowl. I bought mine from Sainsburys for £1.99 and it gets used at least 2 or 3 times a week.

Ok finally I can see the point of salad spinners! Never thought of using it to store the lettuce as well :) Thanks for the tip

Put your washed soggy salad leaves in a clean tea towel ensure corners are held in one hand then thwack it at a 45 degree angle in a diagonal movement only the once ...water shoots out the end dry leaves remain. Amazingly doesn't damage leaves!

rinsing out with a bit of water takes around 30 seconds
Yeah but I have a tiny sink, a very small plastic drainer and hardly any cupboard space, so it loses for me on a few counts. I use my smaller sieve anyway!

used mine once - sat in the cupboard taking up space since - that's a thought I could get rid of the waste of space on freecycle.

btw why not just buy pre washed and packaged salad and save yourself precious time ?

  • I am going to buy the oxo good grips spinner, my mum used to have a cheap one which is fine but it did bow as it wasn't thick or tough enough when you held it in your arms.

Of course you can store the salad in the bowl and put it in the fridge, space permitting.
