Received my Invitation this morning and tried to verify online. Had to use Experian as I don't have a driving licence. FAILED . Not sure why as I have a passport, Credit Card in my name, several bank accounts.

anyway phoned HMRC on 0300 200 3300 at 13.16pm (expecting to be able to read War and Peace whilst I waited) however I was transferred to the correct place and all was completed by 13.21pm. They only asked for my and my DH's national insurance numbers.

Now waiting for the new tax codes to arrive through the post.

Done mine just now. All gone through.

Experian asked me to provide bank account number. They provided 1st and last digit. I have several accounts so had to look around all accounts to find correct account number.

    Got the following email back:-

Thanks for applying for the new Marriage Allowance. We’ve received your application.

We’ll reduce your personal allowance by £1060 and increase your spouse or civil partners allowance by the same amount. This will apply for the current tax year and will continue into future tax years.

If they usually complete a Self-Assessment return, we’ll write to them to confirm the transfer.

If they’re employed and pay tax via PAYE, we’ll send them a revised notice of tax coding by post.

I am on PAYE + complete SA return so I am right in saying they will send me revised tax coding and letter confirming the transfer?

  • Well, we've had the revised tax codes, but my husband's company car has changed and it looks like he might have to pay about £1 a year at higher rate tax, so will they take it back off him? lol
  • this is my first post on here so sorry not sure of how it works......had an email from HMRC advising that we could go ahead to apply for the new marriage allowance...I tried to register and was rejected (even though have all the documents needed) then realised my husband needs to register, but he's a EU national. I called the helpline 03002003300 and was on hold for 26 mins (at 9p a minute that's already cost me about £2) and had to abandon the call. Does anyone have any info as to how to apply? Do they send out a paper form and if so how do I get one, or do I have to spend more money on hold? Thanks

Rung up HMRC at 8am and after going through the automated replies was told that they were very busy and to ring back later then promptly cut off! Rung a second time and after 5 minutes the call was answered. I explained that the verify system had failed for us after having received the invitation and could she sort it out over the phone! She took my and my partners national insurance numbers and said it was all sorted and that revised tax codes would be sent in the post! She also said that they had just started taking applications over the phone if the invitation had been received and you either couldn't or didn't want to apply online!
So a result for us at last but only after waiting for 15 weeks and making umpteen phonecalls! Hope this helps those going through this frustrating procedure!

As far as I know auroradawn61, if your identify cannot be verified on line you have to ring the phone number given. I've tried to get through at all times of day but the only time I got through I was told I did not qualify because I was retired and didn't have any allowances to transfer. I've since learnt this is wrong but haven't been able to get through since.
  • Update....I left my husband instructions to call HMRC again today while, I was at work. He was on hold for 39 minutes but finally got to speak to someone and hopefully we have now successfully applied..will see if the tax codes have indeed been changed..so it seems that the if you are not able to get through the online verification then the only way is to call and expect to spend a few pounds to save £200..annoying that they are making money out of us.

HMRC don't make money out of their 0300 numbers. They're included in inclusive landline and mobile minutes too.

Got through to HMRC this morning, without, to be fair, much of a wait.

Simple enough security details needed - but then the problems started.

Adviser had heard of the allowance, but had no idea what to do about it. Spoke to her manager, who said all claims have to be handled by the central unit dealing with these claims.

The wife registered 16 weeks ago - so a fortnight over their 14 week 'promise' and nothing further from them. This route plainly isn't working, so it ought to be possible for the claim to be dealt with by the 'ordinary' HMRC helpline process - as others have found in this thread.

Have they now blocked this route, or are people still getting this put into effect with a couple of code changes instigated by the ordinary HMRC Call Centre?

I beleive there is a specific phone number to use for this which is given in the invitation to apply.

There is a phone number given in earlier posts.

They are dealing with a large volume of claims so dealys are inevetable but the allowance will give effect back to the beginning of the tax year so nothing is lost.
