  • Well, I can't get through on the phone line. After answering all the relevant questions they tell me they're too busy and asking me to ring back.

I have a passport but no driving licence and Experian couldn't help me either. It seems to me that to get anywhere you need to have both.

Tried to ring HMRC again this morning and didn't get the usual 'Goodbye' after 3 minutes of questions, so thought there was a good chance of getting to speak to somebody. However, after holding and listening to their repetitive music for 22 MINUTES, a recorded voice told me that there was no-one to take my call and cut me off !!

Registered my interest - had an email ages ago confirming and they will contact me later - nothing to date!
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

As I've said before on this thread, I registered on the very first day I was able to (February 20th). I had an Email at the end of March saying I would be one of the first to receive an invitation to apply but have had nothing since then and am still waiting! I was also told in the Email in February that I would receive this invitation within 14 weeks. This timespan ran out last Friday so I rung HMRC up and after waiting for 40 minutes finally got through only to be told that there were "teething problems" with the beta trial and that there was nothing I could do other than to keep an eye on my Emails! All very frustrating but at least it will be backdated to April 6th! Good job we are not desperate for the money!
So Silvasava, you are not alone in your frustrations! Hope this helps those in the same position as me.

Will this apply to retired married couples, where one pays tax on pensions and property income, and the other does not pay tax on the income from pension and property income ?

This is the marriage allowance if you already entitled to claim the married couple's allowance then you can't claim this.
To be effective one must not pay any tax and the other must only pay base rate tax.
You can transfer 10% of the personal allowance from the non-taxpayer to the other.
The only thing that is constant is change.

I intend to contact my MP to get this sorted
I have repeatedly tried to use VERIFY but I have no eligible proof of ID (Passport, Credit Card) limiting me to Experian, who do not accept my mobile phone or photo driving licence - so I have decided that I can't be who I thought that I was ....

Finally got the invitation through after commenting on Twitter! This was picked up by someone at HMRC. However, we came to a grinding halt after going through the application when we told them we didn't have a valid passport or photo driving licence and basically told us to ring HMRC, giving the standard number and not a special number or code as other people have mentioned on this thread. When we tried to ring it told us they were busy and to ring back later! We have contacted HMRC before on this matter and they have been no help at all! We have waited 15 weeks for this invitation. What a waste of time and effort!
