  • Seduce tastebuds with bean and lentil recipes to really make progress as they are a very good source of protein and cheap to boot.

Blitz them, then mix them with the grated cheese next time you make pizza.

I love butter beans in a paprika-flavoured tomato sauce, with some chorizo added if you eat meat, or like Pink's suggestion with leeks and cheese sauce, topped with cheesy breadcrumbs and grilled until crunchy and golden.
Back after a very long break!

If you're going to add them to your shopping list, the dried ones cost a lot less than tins,

they're 39p in Lidl (the cheapest i've seen so far) and i love them. have them in a cassolet type dish but mire poix of carrot, celery and onion, garlic. sautee all this. then add fresh thyme/parsley, cabbage and whatever meat you have. s&p, bit of sugar, and veg stock. i do mine with either lamb or chicken. cooked for about 1hr for the chicken, or 1.5hr for lamb. it's very moreish, btw.

alternatively, in a salad with salad leaves/little gem, smoked fish (mackerel/trout), egg, red onion, fresh parsley, toms, cue, sweetcorn, grated carrot and a nice honey mustard dressing.
  • @OP it is always worth learning to cook them from scratch in yer slow cooker if you have one in a nice flavourful salt free broth( bay leaf/ves, bit of carrot, onion, parsley stalks..) and getting good at it.
However for those times you need to grab a tin keep cupboards well stocked up with favourite lentils and beans for when you want to grab yourself a quickish meal.
Obey the rules of each pulse: butter beans love cheese, cream, milk. Other pulses are more flexible. Work with them to get best flavour out.
Best of luck on cookery endevours.
