I always do; haricot beans are v. nice in soup too - if you want my pork, pasta and bean soup recipe I'll type it up later.

  • I would love the recipe as only ever seem to eat beans which i love in a bean salad, thanks very much!

Will now be having hot spicy beans for dinner with some nice crusty bread...

    Hi. Have a look at deliaonline.com: http://www.deliaonline.com/ingredients/haricot_beans,127,IN.html

She gives a little bit of info on the different types of beans and a link to some recipes. I use different types of beans whenever I want to stretch a casserole or a hearty soup as they absorb the flavours - much cheaper than adding extra meat. You could also try making Mexican-style refried beans (don't have to be pinto beans), or blitz them down with olive oil, garlic and fresh herbs to make a dip if you wanted something cold.

Chorizo and butter bean stew from Rick Stein's food heroes is one of my favourite recipes. Really tasty, and really quick and easy to make!!

Hi; I never use quantities so here goes ... dice an onion, fry in oil gently, add diced pork loin (I usually make this with 2 or 3), diced carrot (2), diced courgettes (1), fry gently, add tin of haricot beans and a tin of chopped tomatoes or a tin of baked beans, add handful of small pasta shapes, top up with water, add a stock cube and cook slowly for about an hour on the hob ... absolutely delicious.

    Hi

I have a couple of tins of harricot and butter beans, and was wondering if you can use tinned harricot and butter beans as a hot 'vegetable' i.e. can i cook them in a nice spicy tomato based sauce or will they fall apart? (as opposed to the usual bean salad i make)

Sorry if this has been answered before, i did do a seach...
    Thanks!

I make 'butter bean mash' quite often
mix 1 tin of butter beans (heated and drained) with a choppped onion ( sweated until soft), and 2oz of butter; add salt and pepper and blitz with a food processor. I heat mine in the microwave and serve with anything I would normally have mashed potato with. Delicious!!! I usually double the amounts...:D
I will be watching this thread closely as I have haricot beans in the cupboard and I haven't a clue what to do with them ....
    :rotfl: :rotfl:
    Quite keen moneysaver......
  • Thanks so much for all the responses.

Last night I ended up making pork meatballs, then I added the butter and harricott beans, a tin of chopped tomotoes and some passata with plenty garlic, chilli and herbs, then baked it in the oven for 40 minutes. I served it with crusty bread and there was enough to feed 3 of us, with more than half of it left, which i have frozen and will have again next week.
    It was delicious!
I will be trying out some of the other recipes too!
    Thanks again.

I second the mash idea, it works with almost any kind of beans (yummy with chick peas, yoghurt and mustard).
