White smoke from exhaust

  • EGR Valve £112.80 from Eurocarparts (424900011)
    Turbo £786.00 after exchange (719850160)
So that's less than a grand.

DPF Genie to clean the existing DPF should be <£250

    Oil and sundries - £100

Let's say it takes two days to do (16 hours) at £60 an hour = £960

    So that's ~ £1000 + £250 + £100 + £960 = £2410.

I've assumed it's a 2007 2.2CRTD and I've estimate labour based on how long I estimate it'd take me to replace the turbo and EGR, plus remove and refit an exhaust, using semi-pro tools in a home workshop (based on experience of doing similar on a Peugeot light commercial a couple of years ago and on similar for a Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD). I haven't added mark up on the parts as they're retail prices.

It may take less/more time of course depending on pitfalls encountered, but the quote you have is a joke.
  • Been through it all I need you to live near me... LOL

    They had EGR Value £290.27
    Turbo £1051.84
    DPF £3057.60

So then guess their labour and sundries would have been £2600

Hubby has gone to take it to another local garage (independent) just to see what they say. We haven't told them anything else other than white smoke coming out of exhaust so we shall see what they say.

    Fingers crossed

If I were nearby I'd be happy to help. I could sniff test the coolant header tank and run a leak-off test to start with, which would help in narrowing down a few of the options discussed here (HG and leaky injectors).

Well the DPF cost is frankly ridiculous. Less than £800 for a new one here:
    http://www.cats2u.co.uk/34803/Diesel-Particulate-Filter/HYUNDAI/SANTA-FE/2.2
And that's retail to public - fitting a DPF is no more difficult than fitting a catalytic converter or other exhaust component. Sometimes fittings and pressure sensors can be a PITA to remove, but that doesn't account for 3 grand in costs.

If it's blocked it's possible to get it chemically and/or thermally cleaned by a number of places, DPF Genie being one, and that'd be the first option I'd follow before replacement.

Either way, seven grand's a joke.
  • Thanks beenthroughitall really appreciate your help.

Their quote included sensors and gaskets for all the parts. I have no idea when it comes to cars, I thought it would just going to be a head gasket shows what I know.

I heard about getting it cleaned, but I'm not sure what is actually wrong with it, I'll look into that when we find out what this new garage finds.
  • So new garage says it's just the turbo, but guess that could change when they get in and have a real look.

No worries. Sensors and gaskets are sensible, but you're not talking thousands of difference.

Whereabouts in the country are you, in case anyone here has a recommendation for where to take it?

Is this car used mainly for short trips?

  • I have no idea. So im guessing not

Like I say, let us know what area you're in, you might find people have some recommended places to try.
