White smoke from exhaust

I'll take your bet as it sounds like unburnt diesel.
Get it to a garage asap and have it thoroughly checked over before something simple can expand into a knackered turbo.0 -
Hydrocarbons wouldn't produce white smoke0

Sniff test with the exhaust gas machine over the expansion bottle will show if the HG has gone immediately.
the HC levels go from 15-30 ppm to right off the scale immediately the probe goes near the expansion bottle if the HG has gone.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -

Any garage worth their salt with an analyser should be prepared to do it for "a drink".0 -
Update - So I took it to a garage (just a normal garage, not hyundai dealer) who I rang today for a quote. They said there wasn't much right with the engine and that to fix it would cost me £7k....
£7K....????!!!! Seriously, I don't understand how the engine could be that knackered when it still drives and no warning lights on..
I'm completely and utterly heartbroken, we still owe money on the car and we sure as hell don't have 7000 to get it fixed.
What am I going to do...????0 -
Take it elsewhere for a quote, then one more just to be doubly sure they are not trying to rip you off.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

It's a Hyundai. They all know that good, fully-working, issue-free 2nd-hand engines are as rare as rocking horse dung, so are quoting for a new engine.
My old mechanic had a Hyundai that needed a replacement engine sat on his forecourt for over 8 months before the owner was forced to remove it as they wanted a 2nd-hand engine fitted rather than a new one. The mechanic was very good at sourcing such items, but he drew blank after blank.
This was mainly down to the fact that they are designed to last the 7 years of the warranty. After that, they tend to fail unless meticulously serviced on a more than regular basis.
If the engine is indeed, unrepairable, then it might be cheaper to look to obtaining another engine from foriegn suppliers.Never Knowingly Understood.

White smoke when idling I know is a sign of valve stem oil seals needing replacing on the BMW N62 engine......hopefully its not something as expensive as that repair!
I wouldn't take too much notice of the £7K quote yet, its sounds ridiculous - try to get a quote from a reputable independent garage and a diagnosis of what exactly is thought to be wrong. Those Santa Fe's are generally very reliable so hopefully its not a crazy price repair job, you could get an entire engine unit from a breakers for a lot less!
As for Hyundais being unreliable as per other comments, we haven't found that -owned an old Sonata for over 10 years and it was absolutely rock solid, great service, no engine issues.0 -

What specifically is wrong with the engine? What did they discover? All your base are belong to us.0 -
Thanks for all your answers.
I'm not sure they didn't say, just that the 1st quote they had was for more than the car was worth, when I said how much roughly he said £7k, but that he was making some more phone calls to try and make it cheaper.
He did mention that the injection, turbo, and something else needed replacing. He said that one part along came in at £2800. Not sure what that was. Waiting for a phone call from him tomorrow for the actual quote and then I'll ask for a detailed written quote.
It's due an MOT in March what happens if I've not fixed it by then..?0
