White smoke from exhaust

Hi,

Hoping someone could maybe give me a clue as to what's wrong with my Hyundai Santa Fe.

It's a 2007 and we bought it used 2 years ago. We noticed lately that when you start it there seems to be no power when you press the accelerator. Once it's been started for a few minutes it's slow to pull away but seems to get better.

Yesterday white smoke started coming out of our exhaust, I checked the fluids and noticed that the coolant was empty (I had only filled it 4 weeks ago) and the oil was low. Filled them both up but smoke still coming out and smells like burning.

Thought it was a broken head gasket but no sludge on oil cap, and took radiator cover off started car and there was no bubbles. The coolant is still full today so pretty certain it's not leaking.

Does anyone know what it could be...?

Thanks
Susan.

    Need some more information.

    What year is the car?
How many miles does it have on it in total?
How often has the oil services been done?
When was the oil last changed (date & mileage)
Does the white smoke clear when the engine gets warm?

Sounds to me with poor acceleration and slightly improving whilst being driven smoking there seems to be a compression or cylinder issue going on.

lets define white smoke here too, Is it fully white smoke? or there a blue-ish type white smoke both are definitively separate symptoms of something.

let me explain to give help you give us better understanding of the smoke here.

White smoke not allot, cold starup, disappears when hot=Normal

Continuous white smoke=WATER is leaking somewhere.

greyish white with blue tint to it=OIL burning

    Grey/black smoke= fuel mixture

which of the above would categorize the smoke coming out.

Looks white/greyish smoke and bellows out when accelerated, but also comes out when just stationery. Also smells like burning.
  • It's diesel
  • If it's losing water, suggests the head gaskets gone, the old wives tale about oil and water mixing are only true occasionally.
Failure between the water jacket and cylinder is more common.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • It's diesel
Ok one test for you to do and report back, click over the ignition 5 times in a row do not accelerate do it in quick succession (have someone stand to the rear and look for a bigger than usual puff of smoke), after 5 times and bigger puff of grey smoke blows out without acceleration on the 4-or even 6th start up in quick succession of eacother there could be an injector issue.

please report back with the findings as soon as you can so we can eliminate one potential issue
  • ok so did 6 times, white smoke coming out on each start, but no bigger puff of smoke on any of the starts.

btw thanks for your help on this.

Ok so it may not be a dribbling injector.

Now I would be looking at either:

A.a turbo pipe broken split or loose or popped off turbo pipe has there been an increase in the turbo noise, such as fluttering when lifing off, or turbo sounds like its about to take off a jet fighter?

    B. broken breather pipe.

    C. broken mass airflow meter.

Has it been using more diesel than normal since the smoke started or just before it started?
  • No extra noise at all that we have noticed.

And not been using any more diesel than normal.

The engine doesn't overheat and no warning lights are on.
