Anyone got any other alternatives ?

I'm leaning towards the Lenovo from Misco.

You'd be better getting the Misco one. It has a better i5 4th gen processor, whereas the JL one has a 3rd gen i3 processor.

Thanks, wondered if that were the case.
  • I recently bought from HP, who I've not used before. Now, I wanted a tower with a bit of grunt for software development so went big-ish with CPU and memory but they have cheaper options. I've found it an excellent PC so far. It came with 8.1 which is fine (I don't use the 'tiled' features at all).

I just checked their site and they now do mini desktops starting at 269. Not sure what they are like but they look pretty cool :)

Other people have mentioned Lenovo - I have a high end Lenovo laptop from work and have had no problems with it so far (apart from a hard disk failure where I lost 10 years of work!)....

If you want games, then its the processor you mainly need to think of, coupled with a good video card

Again a poorer processor than the Misco one, as well as not having DVD/CD which the OP may require.

    Thanks

What kind of processor and graphics card would I look for ? Should I stay clear of the celerons ?

Could I get a better machine if I increase my budget some more ?

Good point I forgot to mention a DVD drive would be needed.

I know I mentioned just a base unit but would it be cheaper to buy a bundle eg monitor, keyboard etc ?

I'm not into gaming at all, but would suggest an i5 processor or i7 if into heavier gaming, and avoid Celeron. Graphics card, I'll leave for someone who's into gaming to advise.

Of course you could up your budget and get a better spec machine, it all depends on what exactly you want, and what you want to pay.
Whether it would be cheaper to buy a bundle, hmmm, goodness knows. Really, you'd have to find your ideal desktop specs and then compare prices with a bundle package. I somehow doubt it will be cheaper, but then I may well be wrong.

the G3220 , i3(s) , i5(s) and i7(s) all have perfectly good video systems built into there CPU

you have not mentioned what machine you are using to play your games at the moment?
I would imagine most of the games you have mentioned above would work well on a inbuilt video system , do any of those games need hyperthreading and other things that are on the i3 and i5 cpu?

everyone keeps posting links to prebuilt units that have cut down bios,s and no chance of adding extra,s due to case design

I refer you back to the one I listed at scan ,that uses a STD PC case and suggest that you add the extra £££ s needed (if indeed needed) to upgrade the CPU to a higher spec i3 or i5

note that the misco , has in fact got the lower powered i3 4460S processor in it , and only a 500g hard drive (sata 2 perhaps?)
