Booking a holiday in term time ?

If you intend to take a holiday in term time do you just let the school know your child will not be in. Or do you have to fill out a form requesting time off even though you know it will not be granted.

Any experiences please. it will be for 5 days over the May Bank Holiday.

Grocery Challenge £200 pm Jan £0/£200

I think its probably best to pre-empt the responses.

definitely fill in the form/inform the school before you take the kids out on holiday. I would do it at the start of the next term (ie after the Easter holidays) for a break at the end of May.

Our son's school doesn't issue holiday forms, as they say forms suggest that permission might be granted for a holiday - and it wouldn't be. So we just write a letter instead.

Cue the usual debate about why you shouldn't take your child out of school ... which I won't get involved with.

It's best to let them know so they can give any extra work etc. I'm not sure if the invoice comes before or after, so it's probably best to give notice.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Thanks all I will write a letter then into school...

  • Cant do sickie as son will talk all about plane etc and will be tanned..

I am not making excuses as such but our son has gdd and is special needs there is no way he would cope with a holiday in school holidays due to panic attacks, nervousness and other issues.. He is suffering from terrible eczema at present and we are hoping some sun will help clear it up as no prescription stuff will..

Check your local authorities criteria for holidays under 'exceptional circumstances'. They vary from area to area, but mine has something like (sorry can't remember exact wording) 'where a holiday is recommended by a health professional due to a physical or emotional issue'. You have to have written evidence from the health professional concerned. Your son may come under this category.

Other than that, is he 5 yet? I'm pretty sure I've read something that says you won't/can't be fined if your child is still 4.

Also is the school shut for election day (have they announced this date yet?) and if so does it fall within your hol, you might be needing a day less than you think to take him out.
  • How many actual days are they having off school? If only 4 (as one day a bank holiday?) you wont get fined as it has to be 5 consecutive days :)
