Paying bills weekly

Options
Hi

Really not sure about this but as don't know if things will improve so I'm thinking I'm at the point when I need to arrange my utilities weekly does anyone know if the energy companies and council for council tax allow you to pay on weekly terms

and

why, do you lose the direct debit option (is it coz it costs more to process weekly payments?)

I've just called Anglian Water and they have said I can pay weekly and shall arrange a 'cash book' but that I'd need to phone to pay of on the debit card or go to a payzone

I don't have the ability to open other accounts to budget for each so I'm thinking this is the best way? would it become messy if I have to go back to monthly?

  • There is nothing to stop you setting up a standing order through your own bank for a weekly amount. I have always found that dividing the monthly bill by 4 works, as every 3 months you will end up, effectively, 1 week in front and over the year effectively a month.

Most organisations prefer payment monthly by direct debit it is true, but standing order may actually give you more protection as you can change or amend it and they can't, whereas the opposite is true with a direct debit.

Thanks for responding, yeah I will try and do this, get the bank details like you suggest, I'm finding the utilities companies first line is straight away You need a cash account

Just had bit of an argy-bargie with e-on who say their only option is to send a cash card so I can pay at the post office, owing to circumstances and see it rise nearly a tenner for the privilege each month

So not only am I having to make unwanted barbaric trips to post office or co-op but my bills increase when I've a bank account!

I'm really disappointed that you can pay the likes of a short term loan far, far easier then you can utilities to me!

I did have an additional thought this afternoon that of course I receive my weekly pay, put a proportion of the most important rent aside and selectively now set up, if I can, a direct debit to concentrate on managing per week on each of the utilities owning, perhaps that might be the way to go, I am shocked the utilities industry can't handle this better and it's almost an alien question, I just worry this is going to become 'messy' : (
  • if i recall it doesn't matter for most utility payments if you pay daily weekly or monthly AS long as the due payment(i.e. the monthly amount)is paid in full and on time

The energy co has a totally different view, sorry

    Was paying £78.00 under a D/D
pay per weekly it works out they'll want £88.00 per month

With an account that was already supposedly in credit! and that is only why my credit report won't be affected apparently so that is something har har, tried to get away from e-on in the past but then it always comes about I'm not in credit

Glad the ultilies works to the treat customers fairly rule as I'm only hearing one option, suppose they'll want to know if I allow it to go into default :D as that seems pretty much the only way to be heard!
  • Update time - I needn't have worried!!! what a banana! got 2 months paying reduced on the "payment card" (taking matters in my own hands there) before I received a demand with BANK DETAILS and asking if I was in financial difficulties! pfft .. it still says spread the cost of your bills with a monthly direct debit or else get a pre payment meter, awesome when you are a weekly paid worker! :)

Hope this assists anyone in a bind.

Wouldn't it just be easier just to have a well maintained spreadsheet to keep an eye on your spending? Then you could just pay monthly and avoid all this trouble.

Would paying £x amount into a bills account each week for the DD to leave monthly achieve the same result - you would need a buffer in there but if you stagger all your DD's across the month this could work.

Just a thought to try to save alot of hassle for you swapping and changing, from monthly to weekly and from billed to prepaid ;)

There is another payment option... You can set up an online account with Eon. I had issues with the dd payments they wanted from me so I just logged on and paid them an amount I was happy with by debit card.
