Did you do this penalty free?

I can't see on their site if internal switches incur the £30 penalty or not.

As Molerat has said yes they do unfortunately, but in the 6 months since I signed up their tariff had become £124 cheaper for me, so it was a no brainer! (that's based on I think about 23,313kw per year.

I had actually emailed them after I switched to say that their prices were great but why was the standing charge three times what Npower were charging me. And the standing charge was part of the reason the tariff had become so much cheaper because they had slashed the rate to Npower levels in those 6 months.

If they keep up this commitment to low prices and good personal (email based) customer service I'll be a long term customer.

Energyhelpline indicates annual savings on that assumed, high usage (and ignoring the fact the original contract would end in November) of £108, so £54 for the half year remaining, less the £30 early exit fee means you've only actually saved £24.

What you have also done, of course, is locked yourself into that new tariff for a full 12 months.
Great news if prices were to rise again. Bad news if prices continue to fall.

Yes you are right actually it was £108, I got mixed up with my electricity switch which was £124.

Yes assuming I had switched at the end of my contract to the same deal then yes, strictly speaking, that is what I saved. However there was a day when I let these things auto-renew onto more expensive tariffs so I'm going to still call it a £108 saving over a year! :)

Yes of course but that is always the case. The biggest energy price fall has happened and they are now recovering. The cheapest suppliers wouldn't have been affected by Miliband's price freeze (if I understand correctly), so that wasn't a factor. And even in the worst case scenario that tariffs fall dramatically again in the next year, the most I can lose out by switching early is the exit fee of another switch minus my saving, which amounts to £6. So it's not the risk that you suggest it is.

Taking a leap into the (almost!) unknown I've just applied to switch to Zog for gas and GB Energy for electricity - a big saving for me, hope both their admin. and IT folk can keep on top of things as they become better known - unlike a few of the other recent up-and-coming independents!
I will post updates as things progress.

Well, email received today from Zog to say that the proposed switch date has been delayed from that originally quoted (14th May) to 27th May because the IGT didn't accept the switch on Zog's first request so they are having to send a further request. I have not encountered this before with previous switches, and have also posted in the IGT thread because I don't understand what right or grounds an IGT can have to do anyhting other than accept a switch as they are not the supplier. Full marks to Zog for informing me, however.

From the other thread, I see you only applied on 23rd April.

That together with other dates you specify, would indicate to me that the IGT didn't object to the switch, but the involvement of the IGT has caused a delay from the 3 week switch you originally requested.

A delay in a switch is not uncommon where an IGT is involved. That is because they are currently not all on the same system that the suppliers use, and so the switch may involve paper based communications.
(Someone posted that this would change soon, but not until later this year)

Switch completed! Full marks to Zog for keeping me fully informed about progress and for meeting their revised switch date. Opening meter reading given to them via their online form. So far, their service seems to be very efficient - wish the same could be said for my electricity supplier!

Have just renewed with Zog for a further 12 months. My DD has reduced by £8 per month. Been very happy with them this last year.

Those who have just switched to Zog may want to check with their old supplier about the closing read they supplied.

I just phoned BG to get my final bill (thought this would be automatic, but that's another issue), and BG said I owe them over £250. I kept my account pristine and there should have been a little credit (71p) left to come back to me. I went through opening and closing reads with BG and they said my closing read seemed incorrect. I gave them a read on the 1st of May of 00558, and they had a closing read (from Zog) of 01133 for the 5th of May. Why BG didn't flag 575m3 in 4 days as an error I'll never understand!

I checked my paperwork and the Opening read I sent to Zog was 00565, so heaven knows where they got 01133 from.

Now I have to get this all sorted out myself. Bit of a bumpy start for Zog after I had such high hopes for them!

UPDATE: Zog seem to have resolved the issue within 20mins, which is pretty good.

They say that they sent the reading I gave them to BG, so I don't know where BG got the erroneous reading from. They have spoken to BG who have accepted my reading a re-calculated my final bill.

Phew! That was pretty painless. Well done Zog!

Last query I had with them was dealt with by email in about 30 minutes. Very happy with them!
