Outlander PHEV is not for you then, Mitsubishi would have wanted to sell you the diesel instead, which will acheive better economy on longer (as in more than the 30 mile electric range) runs.
As mrmot says, in a modern fuel injected car, off throttle, in gear, the fuel will be cut off, and the movement on the road, through the wheels, gearbox, into the engine, keeps the engine turning (AKA engine braking) so you're not doing 99.9 or 199.9 but rather infinity MPG. Or you could be using this energy to be charging the battery in an electric car...

Depends on peoples circumstances, if they work 30 miles away and have a charging station at the office that's 15k miles a year at a substantial saving.

There may also have been better deals available on the PHEV and not on the diesel version. I know there was some great lease deals about late last year on them.

There's also company car tax benefits to consider and congestion zone.

Once the initial battery range increases on PHEVs in the future, I'd like one, I'd have an i3 if they weren't so expensive on lease.

    timbo58 - what's your car?
gazter - the Outlander PHEV's MPG depends massively on the journey distances. Do 20 miles at a time, and don't go full throttle, and you'll use NO petrol. Sounds like you've had a few 'long' journeys...

    VW up! 1.0 75 ps.

As I previously said if I pay no attention whatsoever to the various clever devices and HUD and do my normal driving throughout the week (15 miles commute town traffic and 120 miles round trip on country roads at weekends) it'll be an average of 50mpg, at least.

If I drove carefully, paying attention to acceleration/braking and gear changes as promoted by the training software on the HUD, I would get over 60mpg.
The same as the Manufacturers figures.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

OddballJamie - yep that's all fair enough, but gazter was complaining about the 'MPG' of the car - he was never going to get that MPG on the long distances, which is why it's so dangerous to throw around these MPG figures for this car, and other hybrids. Saving thousands buying the thing could of course off set that.
timbo58 - you sound like a very economical driver, I hope there's no queues behind you!
