I'd love to grow organic, but would rather have help by any means necessary until I get to grips with growing anything. So, definitely not organic at the moment!!
KILL everything?? Now that's something I can do easily! Unless you mean something else by KILL?0 -
Weed Killer
But read the info, so work best when the weeds are actively growing, some only kill the tops, you want to kill everything.
When its free of nasty weeds then you go nice and organic and feel good about yourself. But weeds are Gods invitation to buy chemicals.
Covering ground to smother weeds is an idea but not as good as spraying.0 -
Would a weed killer like this be OK?

Just been offered some seed trays and flower pots free of charge
I just asked on the selling sites for my town on Facebook
No point in me buying anything (except seeds/plants) until I know I'll be any good at it.0 -
And remembered Rome, and a good garden, was not built in day, or even a year, patience is the first thing to master, unless you have tons of money in which case lucky you
You could try growing stuff in large tubs or pots for now, until garden is clear of weeds, which may be two years timeWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
Grow what you want to eat is a good starting point. The RHS do a good guide of planting times called veg planner https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/pdfs/gyo/vegplanner0

I have been on Google and they all say that because my garden hasn't been recently (if ever!) cultivated, I should wait a year to use it.
So it looks like growing in pots and bags is the way to go for now. I am going to wait for the frost and ice to clear- maybe in a few weeks- and then get a move on with it.
Can I start off with just potatoes at the moment though, in containers/bags?0 -

And the reason is???
No one has touched it for years ..........but you wait another year?
Makes no sense. If the area had bushes/trees and you wanted flowers and expected some hidden bulbs ....perhaps.
But veggies ? no sense.0 -

I meant that I cant use it to grow anything, but I can turn it over, get weed killer put down, make some beds etc.
If I do that then I am hoping I can do something with it in the summer instead of waiting a year. I agree that it doesn't make much sense to leave it another year.0 -

Makes no sense. Did they give a reason.
For a veggie patch you need a blank canvas to start with
THIS YEAR !
psI can do something with it in the summer
Nope, you need to do it this spring, summer is the time you reap wot you have sown.0 -
Would you mind if I just asked a quick question (sorry to hijack your thread WantToBeSE
)?
At the edge of my garden (other side of the fence) are some Willow trees - not Weeping Willows, but certainly a Willow of some type. Is there any likelihood that the leaves from this might have an adverse effect of anything in my garden? I have lived in my house since 2008 and have never been able to grow anything successfully (apart from geraniums in a put!). Everything - from veg. to roses dies on me.
At first I put this down to my dog Jasper, who was a notorious pickle for eating shoots and any fresh baby "veglets" - but he now harasses the vegetables in the Heavenly gardens, so I'm stumped. I feed the plants, water them properly.
Maybe it IS just me!! Rather sad as my mum and grampy (her father) are/were fantastic gardeners...
