Growing Vegetables for Beginners.

Could someone please point me towards a book/youtube video/website that explains how to grow vegetables.

It has to be for an absolute beginner, as I haven't ever planted anything before, not even plants.
Thanks :)

If there's an RHS site near you, go and have a look if you can - they're a great source of advice and help. If not, is there a local allotment or gardening society? Or a local college that runs horticultre/gardening courses - or even, just drop into a good local garden centre. Gardeners are like Jehovah's Witnesses. They love a convert!

Put some seeds into the ground and wait...

Well it works for me (sometimes) :)

Anything beyond that is down to pot luck.

This is a useful thread - I love home-grown veg, but seem to have a death-wish towards anything I try to grow! I do my best, but never have any luck!

Thanks so much everyone :) I'll definitely look at those links.

RuthnJasper- me too, I cant grow anything! I kill everything I try and grow and its annoying as I'd love to turn my tiny garden into a veg patch. Even if I can just grow potatoes, tomatoes and peas or something!
  • Whilst a little old fashioned to suggest a book you should buy 'The Vegetable Expert' by DR D G Hessayon. I beleive it is the worlds best selling book on growing vegetables.
It sets out in simple term s what to do and how to do it. There is a wealth of literature on growing vegetables but The Vegeatble Expert is the only book you need.
Ive been growing vegetables for 50 plus years and we are self sufficent year round other than potatoes but I often refer to Hessayon as a reminder.
So get one and dont despair when things dont happen more often than not you will get lots of salads and vegetables..mother nature is a powerful agent
    Enjoy yourself

Fantastic tip - thank you Howard. I'm going to get a copy of this and have another try this year!

Can't go wrong with DR D G Hessayon., I now have 11 of his books.
Check out your library for your first ideas

Thanks for the great suggestion Howardtog. I'll definitely have a look at that. I've just been to my local library wallbash, and picked up 6 different books.
I actually also picked up 1 'Gardening with children' book (don't laugh) as its very basic, with a glossary, which is exactly what I need.

First of all though, I need to do something about the ground. At the moment its full of weeds, grass etc. I presume I'll need to turn it over before I start doing anything else?

Well first of all are you going organic ? or like me. willing to get help.
I would first kill everything , wait to see if anything grows and KILL again.
Then I would turn over the soil and KILL again.

My garden is lovely......its covered by snow. But I don't expect to get out to the veggie patch for weeks. Or even the unheated green house.
You have plenty of time to make plans, order seeds etc.
