March for Homes

There is a housing shortage worldwide its not just a UK issue
The world needs some 3-4 billion decent homes while only about 1.5 billion decent homes exist. The remaining 2 billion will be built it will just take 50 years
The problem in the UK is that instead of accepting there is a very real need for more homes and building accordingly we set quatas that are some 1/4th of what is needed0 -

Due to housing being very expensive the difference between a situation of shortage and good supply is more than just money
for example in the UK our existing and new homes being built are ~70sqm in size, in Francd and Germany their new builds are closer to 120sqm average.
So we are fixing our future to small crap homes rather than decent sized homes.0 -
Just playing devils advocate, but perhaps the answer isn't concreting the entire country simply so we can breed like rats and destroy the earth with our voracious appetites for consumption.we set quatas that are some 1/4th of what is needed
Perhaps part of the problem is overpopulation?
If we carry on then there will be issues with water is some parts of the world and also meat (which is water intensive).
I can here the unsympathetic cries now "tough tittes.........become a vegetarian", but what about water, isn't a certain amount of it essential for life?
At that point people will have to start saying "tough titties........man up and manage without water.............when I were a lad..........."0 -

Who is "crying about it"? I bought my own home a couple of years ago. I am pointing out why these people are marching. You clearly cannot understand my point. Also you say "IF" you had bought your home alone! So clearly you would have struggled to buy on your own at 7 x your salary, now think about these people who are having to pay 10x the average salary.
It doesn't matter what nonsense you come out with, the facts are the facts. It has never been more difficult for young people to get on the housing ladder.0 -

"Having to pay 10x" nobody has to do anything, if they can't afford it maybe they should look to improve their situation, Move or stick to renting, maybe I should go on a March for cheaper Bugatti's Veyrons...0 -

"Houses for Homes NOT Profit"
And yet these same people would not allow their own pension fund not to be about profit much of which derives from shares, in other words profiting off the workers backs. Lefty types always brush this under the carpet.0 -

Increasing population is the greatest cause of rising demand. You can build a million houses, wont make a jot of difference as the new resource will soon be soaked up by rising population.
PS - lots of Guardian types think nothing of buying up holiday homes in Cornwall and Tuscany thus pricing out the locals, but that's ok.0 -

Yes, only today I've had an enquiry from a FTB wanting to borrow 4 x her income, She cannot afford her ideal London location so is compromising on location just as our forefathers did by default.
I live some 30 miles from London, most people here commute, that's the sacrifice they made. This selfish naval gazing entitlement meme is toxic and very undignified.0 -

I don't think they are marching about that, it is more that the government is not doing enough to slow the house prices down. I would never live in a town/city where I would have to pay 400k for a crappy ex council flat, but people are having to do that in the capital. The problem is where does it end? Before long people will need 15x average salary then 20x average salary.0 -
No they aren't.but people are having to do that in the capital
The vast majority live further out and commute. Nobody HAS to do that.
They will NEVER get what they want. The problem is where does it end? Before long people will need 15x average salary then 20x average salary.
There will NEVER be reasonably priced acommondation in central London whilst it's desireable.
We all have to make compromises that involve travel, career, living somewhere else, or even living in another country.
No-one has a god given right to own in the center one of the most vibrant capitals in the world. If you want it then EARN it or go somewhere else. Plenty of cheaper places in Cornwall.0
