Cheers all. Would a factory reset lose everything on my tablet, apps and pictures etc?

Genuine question, within reason if you could buy any tablet (I already have an early 7" Nexus, thats slower than its ever been and keep hanging up - doesnt help i compare it to my iphone6 on wifi too, iphone is much much faster), what tablet would you buy? Be it 7, 9 or 10.1"?

My current tablet is a Dell Venue 8 Pro (quad core Atom running Windows 8.1) as a small Android tablet isn't much use to me due to having large screen phones. If I had to choose a tablet now it would be between the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 or the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro. Although I never seem to get much use out of tablets and just invested in a new laptop so will probably resist for now.
And if its not between quad core/dual core or the Ghz, how can you tell because even the branded/well known/well advertised tablets have good and bad reviews?

You need to check which actual CPU cores the tablet is using, the post is correct that you can't rely on the number of cores or clock speed to get an idea of performance. It's not straightforward because there's quite a range available but usually they will have a platform made up of Cortex A7, Cortex A8, Cortex A9, Cortex A15 and soon Cortex A53 or A57 cpu cores. Qualcomm produce their own Snapdragon platform which uses their own ARM implementation, currently the Snapdragon 4xx, 6xx and 8xx series with the 8xx being the fastest.

Yes, normally a factory reset will bring the tablet back to the same condition it shipped in so all data would be wiped. Increasingly more data is automatically synchronised which means you when factory reset it and sign back in with the correct account, the data (contacts, pictures etc.) will be synced back to the tablet but it very much needs to be checked first to ensure it's working.

Resetting to Factory - if you're onto Lollipop (and I think a wee bit before), this is much easier.
Yes, everything gets wiped. Apps, pics, music, and the tablet acts like new again, with the setup screen.
You then log in, and it can redownload all the apps you had on the tablet previously.
And your contacts, calendar, email etc should be in the cloud (Google's cloud), and you should have Google Play Music setup, and the newer photos app, both of which should be set to store your pics and music in the cloud, which can then sync back down again when you set up.
Alternatively you plug it into a computer and copy that stuff onto it, and copy back over to your reset tablet.
As I said before, you may lose some settings, preferences, login info, high scores from SOME apps, but again many store this stuff in the cloud too.
AND, everything above applies if you buy a new tablet anyway.

I would root those right away and put stock Lollipop on. :)
  • 1) Get an old netbook for less than £100 at a reputable computer fair near you.
    2) Wipe out the hard drive.
    3) Install Android-x86.

You get a better, lighter, more responsive Android device for that range of price.

It is possible to hack the OS to get the Play Store.
  • As you've got an iPhone 6 I cant understand why you'd want to spend so little on a tablet...
    Friendly greeting!
