There are many available in your price range.

This one for £75 gets decent reviews...

(If the link doesn't work, search "Polatab Elite Q10.1" Android 4.4" on Amazon.)

    Down now to £65!

Not sure if this one is any better spec wise but

    (a) its dispatched by Amazon, which means you'll get it quick.
    (b) i've had an F5CS unit before and they're very good
    (c) they do repairs and customer service in the UK - i cracked the screen on mine and they replaced the screen no probs - came back in a week.

Cheetrs all, is a galaxy tab 2 worth the extra £50 over my budget? Its got rave reviews on Amazon and I've seen new ones on eBay for around £140

On paper, no, unless brand is important to you - which you say it isnt.

Of note, on Amazon it gets 4.4 out of five - the fusion i linked to gets the same 4.4 out of five from 645 reviews and the Polatab one gets 4.2 out of five from 726 reviews.

For me a ten inch is all about the screen quality as first marker . Followed by as fast a quad core as i can get for the money but more important is the amount of RAM .

Those cheapies are running Quad Cores and 1GB, the Samsung is running dual core and 1GB

Quad core what? Just because there are 4 cores, doesn't mean they're any good, and the dual core cound be faster. Nor is MHz or GHz a good indicator - reading the reviews would be a good way to find a good tablet.
I'd advise you to sell some of those shares you're trading, and up your budget, or go for a smaller screen.

Genuine question, within reason if you could buy any tablet (I already have an early 7" Nexus, thats slower than its ever been and keep hanging up - doesnt help i compare it to my iphone6 on wifi too, iphone is much much faster), what tablet would you buy? Be it 7, 9 or 10.1"?

And if its not between quad core/dual core or the Ghz, how can you tell because even the branded/well known/well advertised tablets have good and bad reviews?

Depends upon what use really my 10 inch was bought primarily as a video / tv viewer . The number one in this case was screen .
I tend to read the Techradar reviews followed by Amazon reviews .
  • Last year I bought an Argos own brand 10inch tablet. I can't remember the brand name they used. It was around your price band. The WIFI would drop if you moved about 10 feet away from your router. So I took it back for a replacement. Same problem with number two, so again I took it back, told them it was nothing short of rubbish and got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which was much better but more expensive (although now it does seem to be getting very slow.)

Bottom line is you get what you pay for :)

britishboy - decisions - budget, size, operating system - that's iOS, Android or Windows, are the main decisions. Quality of screen would be next for me. Then you think about how much you'll use the camera and whether it's any good, whether you want a microSD slot, how long the battery life is.
My first suggestion is free. If you've just upgraded your 2012 Nexus 7 to Lollipop, I've been on the same boat, it was very slow after the upgrade. I did a factory reset. That gives you a blank Lollipop tablet, which will be restored after you enter your details (with exceptions, like the all important Angry Birds high scores!) but it's well worth trying this, before spending money on another tablet, that you'll have to do this with anyway.
    In this thread:

You'll see that Asus (who made the Nexus 7) are doing up to £50 cashback on tablets if you send them your old one, and I've just used it to buy a MemoPad 7 for £99.99. Nexus 7 (no accessories needed) goes back to them, and I don't think I'd get £50 for it.
At 7 inch, that's what I'd be looking at, and they also have an 8 inch for a bit more.
Or the 2013 Nexus 7 model.
9 inch - well that would be the new nexus 9, made by HTC, it's premium though, and expensive.
10 inch - I've got a Nexus 10 (Samsung) which I've always liked as it has a ridiculously good screen, but Lollipop has hit it hard - I think I'll have to give it a reset, and it's pretty old for a tablet these days (!).
How about the Sony Z3 tablet? 10 inchers are mostly more expensive.
And if its not between quad core/dual core or the Ghz, how can you tell because even the branded/well known/well advertised tablets have good and bad reviews?

You read the reviews. Samsung have some terrible screens in some tablets, but also make some stunning ones. The first Asus MemoPad had a terrible screen. The second one has a great one.
You can't just even say it's got a 'Snapdragon' processor - they go back years, and it could be an ancient one - you need to know the actual model of processor that's in there - just like a computer!
And just as a wee example - the Nexus 9 I mentioned above, just out this year, £300, is dual core. Do you think those £80 quad cores tablets you see around are faster?!
