What about a compromise then? £500 for you and £500 towards the mortgage overpayments??

Or how would your parents feel if you paid the whole amount off your mortgage?

I admire your determination with your mortgage and all your money saving ways and that is why I always read your diary its really interesting.

Let us know what you decide to do with your 'happy' dilemma.

Hi Benben! What a lovely thing for your parents to do!

How about having the wireless internet connection for yourself (makes such a difference if you don't have to trail wires everywhere!), and have a day out or something for you and DS (doesn't need to cost a lot, but would be something you may not normally do).

This would leave the lion's share to pay off the mortgage if this is ok with your parents!

Or, blow the lot on shoes, handbags and chocolates (not necessarily in that order)!

Aren't parents wonderful! I know what you mean about not being used to spending money - thats a *lot* of money to blow! And a whole year off your mortgage... still, I kind of agree with the half and half thats being advocated here - half off the mortgage and half to buy things or a holiday (i.e., memories and fun for ds, relaxation for you).

My mum gave me some money recently, and I'm doing max overpayments for a few months with it - but my situation is very different from yours. I'm not sure if you have other debt as well as the mortgage, but I do (nearly ten grand still, I know its not a lot on here, but still....) my house needs thousands spending on it and I'm MUCH older than you, I don't have the same sort of age-leeway iyswim, to be in debt till the 2030s. Yike, I never thought of it that way :( Anyway, have a think, I'm sure you'll reach your own conclusion tho.

Just off to work, will have a think in lessons today of what to do with the money :D:D My quidco money has arrived in my account today (£125) so that has been moved to the mortgage fund and it has knocked another month off the total, so now in total I have knocked 2.5 years off the mortgage this year :j :j :j ... 13 more years to get rid of !!! :D

Today I spent £2.55 on lunch. Have been wondering about a few more ideas for the money, but mainly keep coming back to the wireless stuff and bedside tables  , but really I just want to save the money. I know it probably sounds pretty backwards on here but my mindset is so used to only buying stuff when necessary and not just because it would be nice that it would feel wrong to buy stuff that I don't really need an I don't think I'd enjoy the stuff as much then if that makes sense?? Perhaps I'll put it in savings until I find something that I really want/need, rather than pay it off the mortgage?? :D Then again, I could go on a trinny and susannah kinda shopping spree :D

    :)

Even if you do put it in savings - it's a safety net for you both and if it's still there in a whle (I don't know how long!) you could always use a bit of it for a hol!

Of course the money saving/spending makes sense - don't rush in to what you do, and just do what feels right! Can't go far wrong then, can you!
