Not enough money to pay teachers a decent wage, but there is enough money to bail out greedy irresponsible bankers when they screw up, and some people here are flaming those less well of for overdrawing by a few pence..
OT but what the h3ll. Teacher are we? Teachers dont do that bad. I bet if you ask on these boards there are many who would kill to receive their starting wage.. Starting is quite key. I know its not typical but one of the teachers i know (yeah ok she has been a teacher a few years) earns 27k for wait for it..... 3.5 days a week. That is NOT Pro Rata, thats her wage for 3 days.
I know lots of people who are either teachers or training to be, and they all know the salary... Oh yeah, and according to a report on last night they have had a 17% wage increase since 1997 in REAL terms.. Outstripping the Police on 2% and the Nurses (although forget what that was).
Anyway, back On topic.... Bank Charges form part of the businesses profit model.. they will just reclaim the money in other ways, so ultimately its the people who are good with money who will pay for those who are bad.
Dont get me wrong, i dont think you should be charged a charge which was only applied because a charge was raised (did that make sense! lol), and perhaps some sort of monthly cap, but that would only fix the minority.
I only just found this thread i think i should try and avoid it coz it makes my pi55 boil everytime i read more!0 -
Like Northern Rock you mean? Oh wait, that's right, they went bust didn't they. Some people just don't know how to show restraint, to the tune of a little more than 5p too eh? However, fear not, the great British taxpayer will bail them out!

Just think, some of you might now have to actually pay for what you use, well that's terrible! I feel utterly ashamed now that I came to understand the law and stood up for myself. No longer will I be paying for your banking. I am deeply deeply sorry. Every time look at my bank statement and see that I am no longer spiralling into debt for you I will kick myself out of sheer guilt.
How will those poor little bankers ever be able to serve people like you for "free" and afford to feed themselves at the same time? Its all our fault! :rolleyes2
really i thought northern rock were in fact not bust just being ran by the government for a bit.
also dont moan about teachers not getting paid enough, everyone knows the wage/slary they get when they go into a job so should expect to get paid that and not moan about how pitiful it is when their outgoings finally exceed there incomnig pay packet. that goes for for all the other public sector workers currently striking or have striked in the past, yes that includes you fireman out there, when the army had to come in and do your job aswell as their own for no more pay, there are plenty of other people out there dying to have those jobs, there are no end of people trying to join the likes of the police and fire service who get turned away every day who would gladly work for what you got paid 2/3 years ago never mind these days.0 -

Exactly you got - so maybe you should continue paying then!0 -
I think someone has got on his high horse or moral high ground. If he has not had any bank charges then why is he commenting on the forum. Who does he think he is (chasancrai). Unless you have something decent to say, stay off the forum.
I thought this was for people to discuss ways of claiming back these bank charges, not for people to have a laugh at other people's misfortunes.
I currently have a case on hold with the Abbey a total of £16,000 including interest) sixteen thousand pound. The reason I am claiming back these charges is because 6 years ago I had a stroke at the age of 36 which, as you can imagine left my family in financial difficulties, instead of the bank helping they kept taking more bank charges. They, then, took our overdraft off us in one, month (total of £2600) without any notice. It has taken 2 years and a lot of hard work on our part to get to a position that we do not incurr any bank charges and we do not have an overdraft. We are not on the poverty line, but because of circumstances beyond our control, we were left in financial difficulties.
As sad as your story is, it does not give you the right to free load on bank charges.
Have you ever heard of insureance to cover criticall illness, long periods of work etc?0 -

Is this the end of free banking? No. We don’t have free banking in the UK anyway. We have 'fees-free' banking for the in-credit; ask most people with overdrafts if their bank is free. The current account market is hugely competitive, two banks offer 0% overdrafts, two pay more than 8% in-credit interest. They're all desperate for business and any bank that levies charges will haemorrhage customers.
And let's put this in perspective, while it's big money for reclaimers, for the banks it’s a fraction of their £bns of write-offs due to the credit crunch. The Bank of England has just pumped £50bn in there. If they do start blaming bank charges for any new nasty fees, it lets them off the hook for their own credit management, don’t believe their spin.

Ok BigAl suppose you managed to encourage everyone to run their accounts properly, there would still be no large influx of profits for the banks and they would have to charge anyway. Would that then make you the most unpopular person in the UK?
The banks write off debt to third world countries, Does that make it right that they make the shortfalls up by targetting people that are struggling in their own country ?
The banks used to run on the principal that when you had money in they paid you interest and when you owed them money you paid them interest. Banking has never been totally free of charge and why the 'haves ' feel they should get something for free and 'the have nots' have to pay for it is beyond me and is just a legacy of the Thatcher years0 -

I just came here to make that exact point. If my bank ever took £80 off me for going overdrawn I would make sure I was never overdrawn again. (I never have been in my 18 year working life)
People who go overdrawn again and again, are surely agreeing with the charges.
I made the point at work, that you may order a pizza from pizza hut, it may be £10. It make only cost to 50p to make. You cant argue after years and years of buying pizza that the charges were unfair and you want them back.
Of course in todays culture people have to be protected from their own stupidity and the intelligent people are forced to pay for them.0
