If your neighbours are on the same bundle they may well have issues and it would be interesting to see their linestats also.

They just may not be as demanding.

Netgear routers are known for being better at handling noisy lines due to the chipsets used in many of them.

The trouble is that openreach arent really given the time to try and fix these things so you were lucky to get a guy who could spend 3 hours troubleshooting it.

With a bit of luck ,they might put some new wires in but it all costs big money.

In the days of a nationalised BT it probably wouldnt have been an issue but now with Local loop unbundling,,well everyone has to make a living out of what is a fairly poor income from customers..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Engineer did arrive. He went out to check the line again and then said he had to get contractors to replace a section of the line and possibly cut back a tree that is rubbing. So I just have to wait and hope they actually do it.

I've just looked at the netgear routers which seem expensive (both I looked at were over £100), but I'd buy one if it will make any significant difference. I know nothing about them and any advice about which one to get would be appreciated.

One of my neighbours runs a business from home and they are online all day. They say it's slow but doesn't quit working totally like mine does. The other neighbours don't use it much but also say it doesn't go off.

You dont have to pay a fortune for a new/ high/latest spec router. For a 7Mb ADSL line just about any router would do. I have only this very day taken an older Netgear DG834GT out of the cupboard and configured it in place of my bog standard sky supplied router.

It has the Broadcomm chipset, noted for handling noisy lines.

These can be had used for not a lot and probably new for not much more.

A quick search on ebay reveals used very cheap ones..

Incidentally, i dont have a noisy line but the netgear router offers better facilities over the supplied sky router..

Hopefully the new bit of wire will help enormously.

Mr Openreach has obviously spent considerable time and effort in trying to fix your individual problem. Good to hear good news of openreach instead of the usual moans..

The work was finally completed last week. Another engineer came out on Monday this week and whatever he did worked great. The phone line was completely clear and the broadband was back up to the speeds I had a year ago, before all this started. It was wonderful, I could even live stream a movie!

Problem is, it only lasted less than 48 hours. The wind was a bit breezy yesterday and my broadband went off immediately. The phone was unuseable due to the noise and this morning I couldn't even get a dialling tone. Now the weather is calm, I've managed to get the broadband back on by turning the router off and on but its back down to 0.3mb and phone line is still horrendous.

It''ll be a year ago in March that this problem started. I'm at my wits end.

I thought it was only possible to use Sky-supplied routers on a Sky broadband service-aren't the username and password encrypted somehow and cannot be entered manually?
I also have the Sky standard issue router. The speed is OK, but the wi-fi range is fairly mediocre.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It may be slightly different situation, but I'm a former O2 customer, and my Sky router was only plugged in to confirm it worked.

Since then I've been using a Netgear DG834GT with custom firmware and more recently a hacked BT Homehub.
I use the freely available username/password for O2 customers.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • If you buy a Billion Bipac wireless router (e.g. 8800NL), you can change the signal to noise ratio on that which could give you better speeds. There are very good on poor lines. This can be done without contacting your broadband company to adjust your SNR. You could experiment yourself.

I'm just unsure if it's worth getting a new router when the landline is also not working.

I'm using a friend's wifi in their house at the minute as mine is still off completely since Wednesday. It definitely seems linked to the wind, as it went off immediately the wind picked up, but Openreach have told TalkTalk that they fixed the tree problem. I went up to a couple of my neighbours and asked them if their broadband or phone was off but they both said it was fine. It's such a mystery.

No quibbles about it, they need to run a new phone line. I'd insist on it if they can't resolve the issue otherwise.
