You are not out of pocket
The buyer clearly have not got what they anticipated from this deal and as such feels duped
You could totally undo this deal with zero loss and resell to someone else
Unless your plan is to swindle some unsuspecting person into buying something they don't actually want by miss describing it
I do not see why you refuse to simply sell it to someone that actually wants it so that you end up with a good customer not a bad one

    Its a no brainer

yes you have a point in that refunding him would make the situation go away which is possibly the best action at this point.

but I must stress that this item was sold with a full and clear description that parts were missing and classed as 'spares/repair'.
when this buyer collected the item in person we had a chat about the missing parts and they indicated they would attempt to source .
I imagine since that time they have struggled to find the missing parts in question and so wish to return

You are quite right in not refunding, as you sold it in the condition it was, on top of him having the chance to view its condition before handing over the cash. The police will treat the matter as civil, up until an offense is occurring.

But you must not back down to threats or intimidation, No refunds are your rights, you should always stand up for those.

The moment he becomes non compliant or aggressive, that's when you or your Wife phone the police. Its not as if they cannot track this individual down, even he must have the brains to work that one out. ;)

People need to grasp that if you buy something, then you own it.
    .

People need to grasp that contracts should be totally transparent

I can only hope those that don't agree fall foul of a contract that is not transparent and they lose £couple grand on something which was described accurately but not totally and as a result is totally useless to them

Most "decent" companies include a policy of return because they do not want their customers to feel "duped" into buying something they do not want purely because the contract was not wholly transparent (it may say it has a red led but it failed to say it hums at night and they wanted it for the bedroom)
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

Not sure there is anything more transparent than holding an object in your hand, asking it if works only to be told its as dead as that parrot over there. Only to then go ahead and hand over cash for it. ;)

    Not clear enough obviously
I'm not sure what you're not getting about this
Had he KNOWN what he knows now (had the contract been TOTALLY transparent) then he wouldn't have bought it in the first place and that you KNOW
The contract was not transparent enough, and as a result you have a very angry customer
Unfortunately there is no law about providing a totally transparent contract, just a moral one
    Had he busted it
Had you paid £15 to ship it each way
Should it not be exactly as it was before the MISS sale
    I would agree
But you can put this right
You have a moral obligation to do so
You can simply sell it to someone that does want it (without the bolts)
    What exactly is the problem??????
    And if you say "principle"
Then just deal with the consequence
And steer clear of customer service industries for making a living

OP....you have to ask yourself....If he did turn up at the house and attacked you, could you defend yourself?

If not then give him the refund and take the item.

If you can, then tell him where to go and show him the error of his ways when he turns up at your door shouting the odds.

quick update in that I just phoned Police on 101 , and against the text message quoted and it's threat to visit my house they consider this a civil mater so can not act in any way or give a crime number.
The Police would only act if he turns up at my property and acts aggressively.
their advice was now was to call citizen advice .

    CAB won't help.
You are the business in this cas. CAB help consumers - they won;t give advice to businesses.

    Thats so lame.

When the police ignore crime it makes the general population wonder what use they are.

They haven't committed a crime though!

They have not threatened OP either. They haven;t said they will lamp him one, smash his windows, etc.

Police were right. As we all know, their funding has been cut considerably and they need to concentrate on real crime.

Buyer could just as easily have meant that he will take OP to court for a refund when he said he will be ettung his money back, whatever.

The item sale/refund issue is a civil matter, the fact that this 'gentlemen' has made you feel threatened and is intending to visit your home is a police matter.

However, they cannot sit outside your home 24/7, so they did advise correctly in that you should contact them again should said person actually visit you and cause issues.

At least it is on record now. If you do choose to refund are you sure you are getting the exact same item back?
