how do I set my host file, and the only way I could get netgear log in to open was via avast.

you posted the host file contents earlier, open it in notepad and add the line

don't understand comment about avast, you were changing the router config earlier too

domain name servers/dns address

208.67.222.222

this is in answer to the dns server answer, - they should be ok, but just try using 208.67.222.222 instead
