Real advantage is the USCBP in terminal 2 enabling you to complete all immigration and customs inspections pre-flight so you effectively arrive in the US as a domestic passenger.Disembark, collect bags, collect car and go.Done this route several times and it's a breeze.
We've flown from Manchester to MCO direct several times. Never had to go via Dublin.0 -

Where are they flying from ?
Just did a quick search on Virgin for this July, flying Jul 18th 2015, only 3 seats left on this flight and return fare is £1244 per person.
If they budget for around £900 each for direct flights they won't go far wrong i wouldn't have thought.0 -
Hi Nannytone
I have been to the states several times and indirect flights are the cheapest way. I have flown with up to 5 kids aged 6 to 16 and never had a problem changing over and never waited too long - gone via Atlanta, Chicago, Philidelphia, Gatwick, Heathrow - all from manchester. Never lost any luggage or anything, flown with Delta, american airlines, virgin, us airways and all were good.
I have the last couple of times booked via Quidco and Netflights i have found netflights to consistently be cheapest for us always got cashback quickly too. I have dealt with netflights when a flight was canx by the airline and the quickly resolved the matter and gave us a food voucher for the airport.
I hope they enjoy their holiday.“What you're supposed to do when you don't like a thing is change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it. Don't complain.” ― Maya AngelouPayoff some debt by xmas 2015

Don't know if the OP would be interested, but American Airlines currently have a Business Class sale ex Dublin.
I have just booked business class flights to Hawaii for £1,078 pp (August) with BA flights from Dublin - Heathrow - Los Angeles - Heathrow - Dublin and American Airlines for the trans Pacific sectors.
I also made some phantom bookings for other destinations in North America and the prices are really good.
I can understand that flying ex Dublin with kids in tow may be a bit of a faff - but flat bed seats (BA) for less than the price of an economy ticket (in many cases) may justify the 'inconvenience' for some.
Above is a phantom booking for August (last sector to Dublin from New York missed off ) all flights are business class with free pre-booked seats but a more detailed search will get better routings and probably BA flights that will have flat beds. These flights are based on two adults and two kids - still less than the £999.00 pp quoted for economy - so even having to factor in a hop to Dublin, I reckon that it is worth the effort and savings.
Edit to add..........just realised the OP requires flights for 2016!!!! Never mind, hope this helps someone else!!0 -

I'd love to hear how you get on dicky
I'm looking to do a similar trip to yours next year (if the biz seats sale comes up again).
My route is likely to be
DUB - ORD/LHR - LAX/DFW- HNL
HNL- DFW- then AUS - ORD/CLT/LHR- DUB.
At the prices that the biz seats are on offer for, it would be rude not to do it -- the flat bed/seats across the Atlantic are a very attractive proposition :beer:0 -

There has been some fantastic J deals of late - I am sure you saw the BA '2 for 2014' (£) business class deals over the Christmas period. KLM also had a similar offer. As I already had a trip to Asia booked over Christmas/New Year, (ex EU) I was unable to take up any of the offers.
As my bank account is sparse having just returned from the trip I mentioned above, these prices were just too good to turn down.
Mrs DD and I are doing DUB - LHR - LAX - LIH - LAX- LHR - DUB in August. Work commitments are only allowing a 12 day trip, and with a likely island hop, it will be a bit frantic, but still worth it.
Fortunately I was able to select BA's 380 service in and out of LAX.
As an aside, 80,000 + Avios into our household account and 780 tier points apiece adds more value to these trips.
Hopefully a similar deal will be available for you later in the year - very likely given the favourable fuel costs.:)0 -
We did Manchester to Dublin then Dublin to Orlando last summer via Aer Lingus using Avios. Very very long day
We live about 45 minutes from Manchester Airport & the flight to Dublin was at 8 a.m. with the flight to Orlando at about 1.45p.m, so at Manchester for 5.30 a.m.
Took about an hour to clear US Immigration in Dublin & Dublin Airport is nothing to write home about - very few shops - certainly much smaller than Manchester0 -
