  • Spendy day today. Shopping was over budget for weekly shop but I have a monthly budget also as some weeks are more than others due to bulk buying so as it stands I'm still well within budget for the month.
Dh got a few bits of diy done in the house but nothing needed to be purchased for this.

We need to do the house up and are desperate for a new kitchen unfortunately this is going to cost a huge amount. When we went to view the house the estate agent warned us the kitchen wasn't useable, that was 12 years ago and we still have that kitchen. I enjoy cooking but my kitchen is utterly depressing. No flooring, slugs are regular visitors, when it rains was comes in under the door and its not insulated so is freezing all year round. The cupboards are a mish mash and the worktops dont match. The drawers are falling apart as it the cheapest quality kitchen availble. We will need new windows on top of this. Dh can fit the kitchen to reduce costs but it will still be astronomical. This we are planning to save for and I hoping it won't take decades!

  • Everyone is tucked up in bed including dh who is worrying me. He's cold he's still in t-shirts a work so this is not normal, shivering and keeps saying he doesn't feel right but can't verbalise in what why :( This scares me since he's his hospital stay I can't bare anything being wrong with him it terrifies me. I don't want to say what was wrong because its rare and we could be identified but it was serious, sudden and I was told to prepare for the worst.
Its probably just a cold and he'll be fine in the morning :-)

OK mse things today well a NSD so that's good. Some bills have gone out and we still have a fairly decent account again good lol

I checked our credit scores on noddle last night and some how dh has gone from 1/5 to 4/5 but me who has no ccjs and the last 6 years of low credit always paid off has a score of 3/5 I really don't understand how these things work?! On the advice of my bank I have left £100 of savings in my current accounts (joint and sole) because they like to see a minimum of £100 balance throughout the month. Well looks like its working for dh ;-)

Paid £80 off eldest DC school trip yesterday only =-O £450 to go. Its a special trip and DC very sweetly didn't ask to go because she knew it was a lot of money but I saw online and well signed DC up once I knew it could be budgeted for. Although DC is chipping in for the bits that will be needed to take. Its also part of Xmas and birthday present so no main present this year but for the birthday we will buy suitcase etc seen a light weight one for £15 in sale.

Still awaiting job news so fingers crossed on this front.

Wow you've done amazingly well so far!

I've also moved into a house which needs a lot of work! Houses eat money! Re kitchen - I went to magnet, howdens ex who wanted between £7-£8k! I got an even better kitchen from a local independent guy for under £4k! Still an awful lot but it does pay to check out the small guys! And actually my dad fitted it and said it was the best quality he'd come across (not that he does it a lot but he has fitted a few)!

Hope your oh gets better and it's just a case of man flu!

  • Wow that's a great price the independent guy was he a chippy or general builder? Thanks re dh I really hope so :)

Hi well done on how you've done so far. just a few notes on below that I could think of

    Council tax............................. 114

check you are in the right bracket you never know
Also I pay this for only 10 months and have two months where I don't pay anything, I think most people are the same unless you request it monthly, have you factored this in?

    Groceries etc. ......................... 250

think you mentioned a budget of 50 a week here so 200?

Road tax................................ 20 actually its £20 for the year not per month :o

works out to be about £1.70 a month
so instead of 240 in total its 20pound.

    Car maintenance (including MOT)......... 60
do you need to save this amount every month ?

    Medical (prescriptions, dentist etc).... 30

do you get any nhs free prescriptions.
Remember to look out for free eye tests in different places.

    Mortgage Overpayment.................... 200

could you reduce this and pay it towards your debts instead at all.

    Total monthly expenses.................. 2619

wishing you luck, hope it helps

Thanks Saterkey for the post :)

Council tax band is correct and you are right its over 10 months I do like the little bonus of not paying for 2 months :o this year it will be used to pay DC school trip.

Yes you are right I budget 50 a week but also allow £10 a week for top ups though it isn't used every week.

Yep messed up the road tax :o

The car maintenance is new to us this car is our first in 10 years and I want to make sure we can cover any breakdowns, also looking at breakdown cover which will be taken from this budget. Wondering if I should upgrade bank account to one that includes this.

No free prescriptions but I get free eye tests due to family condition and tesco do free eye test for dh then we shop around for glasses.

The overpayment is because all interest is frozen on debts but need to get our LTV rate up for a remortgage before interest rates go up. This fills me with panic I'm scared we'll miss the boat by the time I have a years wage slips due to job situation :(

  • Dh is much better but had to stay off work as he was poorly this morning. 1st sick day in 3 years not bad but 1 day less pay this week which is unfortunate it could have been worse and I'm just pleased he's feel almost back to normal now.

Bad things today, I bought lunch at work. Dh normally makes lunches and I was feeling incredibly lazy last night so didn't make it myself :o naughty I know. So £3.45 spent.

I wish I'd found mse sooner but I feel very lucky that I found it when I did. I've spent years lurker but the advice given to others has helped me immensely.

I did our own DMP without realising what it was and found once I started talking to the dca's things got so much better so quickly.

Waiting on a few more updated figures now.

  • One more thing, I was paid early last month and dh had no income for 3 weeks over December early January so feels like forever since money entered my account. Pay day feels like a life time away and things are getting tight now :(
