Maybe you could use eggs as a base in such as omelettes, frittatas and quiches. Another idea is to use a cheese or b!chamel sauce as a base. I have also used soup, such as mushroom, to make a change. Then there are lots of different curry-type sauces. All of these can be home-made if you want to reduce the processed side of things. Perhaps you can have a punt around the tinternet for recipes.

Thanks Lynne :) To make matters even more complicated, i am trying to eat less dairy products and stick to a more plant based diet.
I will be Googling ideas and hopefully come up with some nice ideas :)

Just a quick report in to say I am green for February and running at just under 14% of my annual budget after 2 months. Hard though. And, I keep being tempted by offers (especially chocolate). I know it is the time of year but my budget (not to mention my waistband on my trousers) won't stretch to this too often. Back to the discipline of meal planning and writing my list and sticking to it this month.

    Good luck everyone

not yet March but have done the weekly shopping for next week. Spent £42.29. this included some copydex and some hoover bags so its about £34 on food.
  • I had a till spit voucher for Morrisons so went there yesterday; have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It's really improved since I last used them for our normal shop; both in quality and price!

The bill came to £50.56 but the voucher took £3 off that. I also need to deduct a further £13.18 which needs to come from my personal budget as that was for treats and Easter eggs so that's £34.38 from the budget and I got loads in! Definitely stocked up for at least two weeks now and it would almost certainly have cost me more at Tesco (not to mention the extra fuel and time cost of going out of my way to get there!).

Today I called to Aldi on my way to work for a few bit I know we prefer or which are definitely cheaper from there; I spent a further £8.00 and got 2 boxes of cereal bars, frozen peas, 2 bags of chicken nuggets, a tub of frozen mixed berries and a lettuce. I know I said I wasn't going to buy cereal bars but bf does have a couple of overnight trips after all to sort his new chair with the engineering company in South Wales so I figured I'd better make sure he eats something other than junk!

Overall that's £42.38 spent from the budget which I'm very happy with considering the amount of food we have been able to get for that and how long it should all last. I need to go today and get a big block of cheese as we are going through more now (wonder bairn is obsessed currently!) and I think it will be cheaper to buy a big block and freeze some than to keep buying those smaller blocks. Has anyone else noticed that the supermarkets appear to have stopped doing those blocks priced by weight (pre packed) in different sizes?!

I will start using my sig to keep track again too so off to update that first
