I was christened with a first and middle name but have been called by my middle name all through life.

My bank card says Mrs M Bloggs but my signature has always been J Bloggs so if using my debit card I have to remember to sign M instead of J as only one initial appears on my debit card, my credit card has both initials on it.

Whenever I have to fill in a form asking for my full name I have to put both down. Whenever I go to the doctors/hospital/bank etc they all call me by my first name which I hate and have never used.

Even at work my wage slip has just my first name and surname on. We frequently change team managers and each time I get a new manager and they have to distribute the wage slips they find it highly amusing to call me by my horrible name for a few days afterwards. (Of course that's once they have worked out who the wage slip belongs to).

Its caused me endless problems, when Im in hospital for instance they look at my chart/record and address me as M....... then someone will come to visit or my partner will call the hospital to ask how J.......is doing and of course they have no idea who it is.

    I blame my mother!

Have you considered a Deed Poll?

Why don't you just swap your first and last names around via deed poll?
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

Typically I've found credit cards have Mr <Initials> <Surname> whereas debit cards have Mr <Firstname> <Surname> (I have no middle names).

I hate my full firstname (anyone who knows me wouldn't use the full name) so I prefer Mr <Initials> <Surname>.

I really dislike it when I call places and they insist on calling me by my full first name. Metro Bank did it when I popped in last week; I cringed every time she said it.

Why didn't you just say to her "Call me Haz "<or whatever you prefer to be called> ?

I often get customers who don't use the full version of their first name ....or even use their middle name. I don't mind and will call them whatever they want to be called once we've cleared the security on the account for DPA purposes.

I could I suppose, but this is where I probably sound either old fashioned or up my own anus; I dislike the assumption that someone may call me by my first name when I don't know them.

If the conversation started "Mr Haz, do sit down" and I felt comfortable, I'd probably do the "Please, call me Hazza" - it's easier that way round because we're going from the formal to informal, whereas I feel

    "Hazza, how are you today?"
"I'd rather you call me Mr Haz"

Puts the whole conversation on the backfoot.

    Just my crackpot opinion though.

  • Mine is simply 2 initials and surname, no title

Think natwest messed up the wife's when she changed her name after she got married as all it now has is her surname, no initials, title or forenames. Her statements come out the same too.

Getting the MiL a secondary card was fun because she is latin and so has long name plus the customary double surname which is basically "paternal maiden surname" of "paternal husbands surname". Was far too long for the space so the system abridged it to "paternal maiden surname" of which of cause looks a bit silly to have a trailing "of". The norm back home is to drop the maiden name and just have the of husbands surname but trying to explain that to the teleoperator was challenging.

I've been with HSBC since Midland days. When we changed to their Premier account they sent a card with my full names on it.

I objected to that on security grounds. How many people really know our middle names.

Now I have title, initials and surname. OH just has initial and surname, as without a title, it's assumed that the name belongs to a man.

No salutations. I don't expect the bank to call me 'Dear....' :)

No tittles either, unless the dot on the lower case I can be so termed. :D

I share your opinion and certainly would not describe it as "crackpot".

There is really no need for someone to use a name at all. If someone is holding any kind of conversation with me, I know they are speaking with me and don't need to have my attention drawn to it by the use of my name.

Not using a name avoids the problem of which name to use and potentially upsetting the customer by the level of formality or using a non-preferred name. It also helps maintain some confidentiality when speaking in an open plan area where other members of the public are around.
