There are lots of Android phones which are good and very cheap.
Like this LG L20 for £9.95 on PAYG :http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/phones/lg-l20/ppayupg?colourCode=WHITEBLUE
WRONG PAYG is from £19.95 +£10 topup and upgrade is £9.95
but you could get the same LG L20 from Tesco Mobile for £7.50 a month
24Mth Smartphone Tariff 250 Mins 5000 Texts Monthly 500MB inclusive data allowance
http://shop.tescomobile.com/pay-monthly/mobile-phones/lg/l50?deal=15771
or for the same monthly price and allowance the better Motorola Moto E

My teenage son has a Windows phone bought unlocked on PAYG from Carphone Warehouse and a PAYG "3" SIM on 3 2 1 and is very pleased with it.
If you get a cheapish Windows phone it will do most of the stuff a more expensive phone will do but not be a disaster if it is lost or broken and is unlikely to be stolen.
By the way, be aware of the "do you have the time ?" trick, a stranger askes you that hoping you will take your phone out and look at it, they grab it and run off.
Someone I work with suffered this form of theft.0 -

I always just estimate based on what time it was when I last looked at my phone, and about how long ago that wasI wondered why there was spate of people asking me the time, they were out of luck, I just looked at my watch
Back to the OP - if you spend a bit of time on this forum, there's one theme that keeps cropping up:
teenager + contract phone = tears
Get a Moto G and a sim from one of the PAYG operators that do bundles, such as Giffgaff.0 -
It amazes me on how many teenagers you see with the latest iphones, i am self employed and work all hours day and night and cant justify the costs of these0

Did you read the OP?Back to the OP - if you spend a bit of time on this forum, there's one theme that keeps cropping up:

The OP made it very clear: "...it also needs to be capped".
In your equation you missed the word "uncapped".
You can spend a lot of time on this forum, but you won't find anything about tears and Tesco Mobile capped contract.0 -
Hi
Just wanted to say Thanks to everyone.
We went for the Motorola Moto G from Tescos as that seemed to be the best deal for us.
Now got to sort out insurance as my son isn't the most reliable !
Cheers

Are you sure that it makes sense to insure a phone that costs just a little more than £100 new and will cost less than half of this in a year?
Just think how much you will pay to the insurer over a year - and they won't replace it with a new if it's lost/stolen. It will be a refurb. And they will use every excuse possible to avoid paying/replacing.
Teach your son to be 'reliable'. Tell him that if he loses/breaks the phone he will spend the rest of 24 months with a cheap £10 handset.0 -
also most insurances i have seen have a £50 to £75 excess0
