It's my son's birthday next week & we're considering getting him a smart phone.
I'm considering a pay monthly contract & I don't want to spend much more than £10-£15 per month.
I very much doubt I can afford an iphone 6 on this so any recommendations on a decent phone for a 14 year old ?
I'm also not sure on decent contracts at the moment. I'd like to get the most minutes, texts, data etc but it also needs to be capped as I don't want unexpected bills each month.

Any recommendations ?

Thanks

Get him a phone without a contract and let him purchase a PAYG sim (or top it up for him each month). People getting "capped" contracts often find they aren't capped at all; I think some are but most networks don't (even when sales people promise they are, judging by the number of problems people have with this on here quite regularly).

You can buy an IPhone 4S in very good condition for around £100 now, (the perfect teen phone/camera/app launcher). PAYG contract at £10 per month with Orange/EE should give enough for the most active teen, (assuming using wireless at home for internet to suppliment the allowance).

It's what I do for my 16 and 13 YO and works brilliantly.

If you are willing to pay an upfront fee you can get an iPhone 5c from GiffGaff for £9 a month and then you just need to purchase a PAYG sim as these are unlocked or with a GIFFGAFF goodiebag for £14 a month

    The OP wanted £15/month max.
I don't think that any appropriate PAYG can be found for £6/month.

Moto G for £13.50p.m. from Tesco Mobile is probably the best the OP can get - and it is a decent phone, not worse than iPhone 5c in terms of specifications:

And they do capping that one can rely upon.

Maybe if they spend a little more upfront they won't be back in 6 months posting how terrible the network is for sending a bill for £1000 because little Johnny discovered videos on the internet and spent 5 hours a night watching them on the mobile connection.

Or just buy a Moto G and buy Giffgaff goodybags seperstely.

I'd agree that the Moto G on Tesco mobile is a good option - my DD is on Tesco mobile with a capped contract, and when her internet runs out it just stops, in two years I've never had an extra charge. But you can go online and buy extra bundles of data, either one off or monthly, so it is reasonably flexible for months where they use extra data for some reason.

Definitely suggest looking at Tesco Mobile or GiffGaff, used GG in the past and was easy to buy a bundle or change it, am currently on Tesco Mobile and the coverage is really good.

I suggest buying a 30 day sim to see what the coverage is like for what's er network you choose, Tesco and GG both use the 02 network so coverage will be the same.

Y only contract phone and Y Iphone?

There are lots of Android phones which are good and very cheap.
Like this LG L20 for £9.95 on PAYG :http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/phones/lg-l20/ppayupg?colourCode=WHITEBLUE

Y do i get the feeling that the Op will be back on the site complaining about the network when we all know that it will be the parents and the kids fault. But lets wait and see :D
