It used to be and for historical and traditional reasons still is referred to as such.
However legally the Sovereign state recognised by the UN and the EU, etc, is the United Kingdom.
Scotland is in effect an administrative region with some powers devolved.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Hmm, who to believe.....
I think the question was is Scotland a country?
Is England a country?
The answer is yes.
The UK combined is a sovereign nation but there are 4 separate countries within it.

what are the properties of a country except in the name?
do they confer any special privileges or responsibility or rights or duties compared to being a region or the country of Yorkshire.0 -

Scotland, as well as England, NI and Wales are all countries and nations.. but without statehood. It's a unique status.
That unique status is one whereby we can have people here frothing at the mouth at the idea of the Fiscal Framework being declined on the basis of reducing Scotland's budget, fine with EVEL being used in the UK parliament or votes en masse to stop 'Scottish MP's' getting anywhere near UK power/coalitions.. ( whereby Scotland is suddenly a separate country and different to the UK ).
But will then turn round in the next post and swear blind that Scotland isn't a country, and is part of the UK equal to the rest and if the UK votes out of the EU, then Scotland as part of the UK will go with her. ( Scotland is no longer a separate country ).
Can't really have it both ways chaps. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

The Catalans (for one) might beg to differ.0 -

just tell me in simple terms how does calling scotland a country make any legal difference (or indeed any difference atall)
it is simply a region of the UK : any special status accrues entirely because the UK government allows it just like if it allowed Yorkshire to have a regional government.0 -

OK. I was only wondering. If that's the case, I'm not really getting into that argument.Leanne1812 wrote: »...Is or isn't Scotland a country?
It is not a sovereign country. I thought that the whole point of the referendum was to decide whether it should be, and the answer was 'no'.0 -

I agree, Scotland isn't a sovereign country. The referendum was indeed to decide whether we should be. Does not take away from the fact that Scotland is a country even though some on here like to insist it isn't....
The racism refers to Clapton, not you. It's not an argument I want to enter into either.0 -

You (and the other SNP acolytes) have been asked dozens of times how being a non sovereign state/country/nation is different from being Yorkshire.
What distinguishes that state/nation/country from Yorkshire?
You have repeatedly refused to say anything but 'scotland is a country/nation/state and absolutely refused to say was separates you from the english.
Racism is a reasonable conclusion especially when combined with the overt racim of 'anyone but the english' and that many people in scotland would like an 'national' anthem about killing English.0 -

Tedious stuff. We're back in 2011, then 2014 again. And don't we just know it.Ross McCafferty â€@RossMcCaff 4 hrs4 hours ago I think Scotland will declare independence just out of sheer boredom at having to relive the same arguments until June.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0
