    Open mindedness surprises you?

Would it be ok if I waved this flag?

Wave whatever flag ypu feel relates to you its your life. It is a pretty flag, would hate to try and draw it myself though ... I like flags nice and simple, the Welsh flag would be too hard for me to draw lol

Come on, town halls across England. Why can't you follow your Welsh and Scottish counterparts and fly the St George's Cross on your buildings?

It's because the English don't have the Scottish inferiority complex and chip on the shoulder.
They also lack the dislike of their neighbours that is apparent in scotland.

Once independent and add 50-100 years they will have grown up.
  • Support for the SNP is not support for independence - neither is people you are friends with on Twitter agreeing with everything you say or even opinion polls conducted when there isn't going to be a referendum.

Most of it is. I never Tweet myself, so I don't have any friends there. Opinion polls you may ignore if you wish. Most people interested in politics would find you a little odd though. And there will be another referendum if the Scottish Govt call one. It's the result that will be in contention if it's a Yes legally. But by that point, it's unlikely to matter what Westminster say.
Presumably the SNP (which is different to other political parties as it operates with honesty, integrity and transparency) will be updating its support base with new economic projections based on oil at $35/barrel instead of $100-110 or whatever they were using before. That way people can make informed decisions.
Yes, I presume they will be. Be a relief frankly, to have the debate out in the open without oil prices being a factor.
It's not surprising I suppose that the Nats spend all their time whinging about how money was stolen from the Scots in the 80s but are complelely silent on the benefits of being in the union (eg when oil falls to $35/barrel you aren't suddenly completely screwed as you are part of a much larger and economically diverse state which can make up your budget shortfall and provide alternative sources of employment for your workforce etc).

Osborne is whinging about oil prices today. Getting the excuses in a bit early isn't he ? Budget shortfall in the offing do you think ?
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

I`m sure a history buff will correct me, but was not Union created by a free vote in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and was`nt Scotland bankrupt at the time? :)

It depends. And only ( skint ) nobles had a vote.
When Scotland ratified the 1707 Act of Union, Scotland had no national debt, taxes were low due to war avoidance and trade thrived from the Baltic to the Caribbean.[14] (For the purpose of balance to this perspective, see Darien scheme.) As a consequence of the Act of Union Scotland's established trade with France and the Low Countries was cut off abruptly. The economic benefits of Union which had been promised by proponents of the Act were slow to materialise, causing widespread discontent amongst the population.

yes of course there is likely to be a budget shortfall if tax take is down due to oil revenue and spending is unchanged

why do you find this surprising and anti english? Most would find it simply maths rather a cause for scottish celebrations

    Ever heard of Catalonia?

I don't think there is any question of the Scottish government holding a referendum in the next decade without agreement of the British government, unless there is a Brexit. Winning a referendum not recognised by the international community as being legal and with Westminster considering itself under no obligation to negotiate the terms of separation would put Scotland in a needlessly poor position.

I'm in no doubt that a referendum will be called by the Scottish government before 2022 (by the SNP government after the 2016 one), and that indyref 2 will be held in the mid-to-late 2020s. But barring a Brexit, any talk of a shorter timeframe is self-defeating nonsense. Hence the SNP's current emphasis on the EU - it is the only card they hold if they want to get bilateral agreement for a binding referendum in the next Holyrood parliament - they know that the parliament after is the more realistic option in any other circumstances.

There is a genuine and justified conviction among nationalists that they will win the next referendum. But I think there is a degree of acknowledgement that even a few extra years of Westminster is better than being de facto independent sooner, but botching the job of completing separation.
