I see that Alistair Carmichael: election court throws out attempt to unseat MP.

I wonder how longl it will take for our gossip-acolytes to claim the judgement was all a Tory plot, or that doesn't matter because the poll conducted in a carefully chosen post code showed that 50.001% disagreed (*) and therefore it is the sovereign will of the Scottish people that Carmichael should be unseated.
(*) or something
Now if this had been an SNP MP......
This man has effectively lied with impunity. Enough said.....0 -

politicians lie all the time
however, the electors can get rid of him in due course (I hope they do) without wasting £200,000 (allegedly)0 -

Personally I didn't think this court case would be won. It was too much to hope that a sitting MP would get his comeuppance for lying. And he got off on a technicality. The legal questions may have been resolved but this is about politics now and the politics stink. In lying to Channel 4 News, Carmichael lied to his constituents, the general public, and journalists. How are the voters of Orkney and Shetland supposed to have confidence in their MP? How are reporters supposed to take him at his word? Yes, politicians often spin you a line and a canny hack takes it all with a pinch of salt; with Carmichael, we’re going to need a Saxa factory from now on.
However, he's done a great deal of further damage to his party in Scotland. And it will be prospective Lib Dem MSP's that pay the price I dare say in May.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -
The Forth road bridge situation is a mess isn't it?
I was speaking to someone yesterday who now avoids work requests from people in Edinburgh.
What's the chances of accelerating work on the new bridge?0 -

Don't know much about this case but I'm assuming factions of SNP supporters brought the case to court.
Which is a tad ironic bearing in mind Alex Salmond was SNP leader for so many years. If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -

you can't be serious that you wish every MP that lies should get their comeuppance ?
maybe start with Whitford who lied disgracefully and must have cause great distress to anyone in the NE who was diagnosed with with cancer or those child or relative was so diagnosed.0 -

Recently there have been more than a few dissenting opinions being expressed by hardliners and activists on social media. Quite fascinating to read, and on several different subjects too. Including discussion of the stifling of honest critical journalism from Angela Heggarty of Common Space, by some SNP/Yes supporters. And on the choice for the list seats.
Have the impression, some of our resident SNP/Yes supporters are being less than honest , not unusual when campaigning , or perhaps aren't as aware as they claim.
What I'm confident of is that general public will for the meantime continue to vote SNP, and in very large numbers for H/R. Lack of competent opposition due to carelessness and historic complacency.
There is however a difference in voting for Independence. And I'm confident the general public will not vote in the numbers needed for Independence anytime soon. In recent weeks some of the gloss is peeling off SNP. It had to happen in time, after missing the Indy Ref boat. Sturgeon is badly missing a side kick equal to the capable support she used to give Salmond. And looks a little lonely up here while Salmond goes solo with his herd in Westminster.
Back to enjoying my toffee popcorn and Radio Times Christmas Edition.
You may be right. However, minor parties trying to split the vote for seats in May have gotten their timing completely wrong ( in my opinion ). It's way too soon.
There's little point in poking at the SNP to be more, this, that or the next thing or more 'radical'. The SNP need to take more voters with them if independence is ever to be achieved... not alienate wide sections of them by becoming 'more left' or 'more right'. Compromise is needed and the SNP have to be an 'everyman' party at the present time as far as Scotland is concerned. Both in Holyrood and as far as any future referendums are concerned.
Folks like Loki are trying to run before they can walk. There's no point in discussing radical policies and changes to Scottish governance while Westminster still runs the show anyway. It's bizarre. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

No. One is SNP the other three come from other parties or none at all. I think all of them voted Yes though. I'm not sure what Salmond has to do with Carmichael though.Cary Welling says: “I’m a retired lecturer in photography, living in Stromness. Member of the Labour Party for years, now a £3 supporter, voted Yes in the referendum and have just voted for Corbyn to lead the Labour Party. A socialist in other words.
Euphemia (Phaemie) Matheson says: “I am a law student, I have no property and my career is on the line.
Fiona Grahame says: “I’m a former teacher, now working part time as a carer and guide, also with my own knitting business. I stood locally as a Green candidate. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

She wasn't even a prospective MP at the time so is irrelevant. Carmichael was the Scottish Secretary. Who leaked a confidential govt memo, denied all knowledge on national tv during a General Election campaign, won his seat by a slim margin. Then admitted he was the source of the leak all along and that he'd lied.
The issue here wasn't about him lying... he admitted that and it's irrefutable. The issue was whether he lied in a 'personal' capacity, or a 'political' one in order to affect his own constituency election result. He got off on semantics.
And please, as Leanne says, let's not even try to pretend if this had been Salmond that you wouldn't have been calling for him to resign immediately. But is over with now. Lib Dems will sadly pay the price for his freely admitted lie in a few months time. Just like they did over Nick Clegg's tutition fees u-turn in the GE.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

you're seriously saying that
-lying in general is OK
-people campaigning for political parties can lie
-that you personally support people who lie in politics.
-you think liars make good SNP MPs
How can you display all this faux outrage when you clearly endorse lying?
unbelievable (well not really when it come to true acolytes)0
