Oh no! Not the Marshal Wade verse thing again!

Do I have to go to all the trouble of pointing out that George Wade was only in a position to crush the "rebellious Scots" for a few short months, utterly failed to do so, and that it was the Duke of Cumberland who actually did crush the "rebellious Scots", and that the crushing off the "rebellious Scots" was at least partly carried out by the Scots, there being more Scots in the Hanoverian army than there where in the Stuart army?

Thanks for posting that again, it really is an interesting piece.

doubtless you are not alone in supporting Anyone but the English or believing the Flower of Scotland represents the very best that Scotland has to offer.

Funny how Scottish threads always end back at old Scottish songs and what they mean or not. Back then also to Alex Salmond's quote after his resignation speech from the song Bonnie Dundee.. which is probably most presently true of all..
‘So tremble, false Whigs, in the midst o’ your glee, For ye’ve naw seen the last o’ my bonnets - and me’.

Make's me smile a bit anyway when I see all the acres of photos of crowds of SNP activist's already out knocking doors and taking over city centres, recent poll results, Nicola speaking to 12,000 at the Hydro and Salmond himself at stowed out community halls all over his constituency, currently odds on to take it.

Nothing is sure of course, and taking absolutely nothing for granted. But he was certainly right on with that quote the day he resigned. Never mind anything to do with Flower of Scotland or GSTQ. The momentum from the Yes side barely paused. Just re-aligned under political parties and groups instead ( SNP/Green/SSP/RIC/Women for Indy etc ).
“As we went over Dundee something came to me, the Burns re-written song about Bonnie Dundee,” he says, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye that suggests he’s up to something.
“There’ a line in it, ‘So tremble, false Whigs, in the midst o’ your glee, For ye’ve naw seen the last o’ my bonnets and me’.

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

As you know I was hoping for a YES vote so I have no problem with the Scots continuing to persuade their voters to vote for a independence party.

I like music and poetry and always celebrate Burns night with my Scottish (and English) friends.

The sad thing about the choice of the flower of scotland, is that any normal decent person in the 21st could think that the best thing that they have ever achieved was a minor victory over a scumbag king of England 7 centuries ago.

Even more sad is their justification that young scots in the 21st century are no worse that psychopathic killer English Lords of the 18th century.

Still, there is nationalistic madness everywhere : Putin seems to be worshipped by young Russians.

There's been no 'choice' of Flower of Scotland.. unless it's by the Scottish Rugby team. It's never been 'official' apart from at sporting events, most recently at the Commonwealth Games. Salmond certainly doesn't favour it ( he's on record saying 'Freedom All Come Ye' would be his choice ). It's just something that's 'crept in there' over the last few decades. There are lots of people who would prefer something else. So it's unfair to say that 'most Scots' want it as their anthem.

And there's been lots of old Scottish songs that sing about battles or unfavourable results after them. Even the beautiful Loch Lomond was about two prisoners down in England... one sentenced to death, the other let free. It says something when it took until the 1970's for something to be written that isn't just lamenting another 'glorious defeat'. Even then the verse that's sung with most gusto ( because hardly anyone knows the first verse ).. is the one that says 'Those days are past now, and in the past they must remain'...

The Corries were a class act. And sung and wrote many wonderful songs. There.... I've admitted it. ;)

The sad thing is that decent ordinary people should be actually vocally condemning 'anyone by the english' and 'flower of scotland' as a defacto anthem : in practice there are almost universal 'excuses' being made, by what other wise, would be decent thoughtful people.

    I like the Corries too.
  • I was giving "the lassies response" at a Burns night on Friday - the Gentleman giving the "Toast to the Lassies" was an old writing partner of the Corries.

He says that when it was written they never expected it to have the resonance it did ..... it was written (as so many of their songs were about a time past). He did admit that as an "anthemic tune" is fab ... because of the tempo and cadence .....

Having said that - the band played "Flower of Scotland", "Freedom come all ye" and "Caledonia" .... and the group sang heartily to them all.

Aye - and the best whisky too :-)

Seeing as the evening was sponsored by a local distiller ;-)

Nice to see the resurgence in distilling happening all over the country - considering how many billions it adds to the economy (£5 bn at last count)

Was impressed at the singing though ...
