There's just been an election... and there's another Scottish one in May. Scottish Labour policies ? I can't really think of any off hand..nor much beyond Jim Murphy ranting on about allowing booze back at Scottish football matches. (<---- Scottish Labour have a fairly recent but repeated tradition, of fighting General Elections on Holyrood devolved issues, and vice versa ). Mabye they'll learn for the next one.

It seems a bit early to release a manifesto for next May TBH and obviously the last manifesto was roundly dismissed in Scotland so is just fit for the bin now.

I'm backing the SNP campaign to rename Scotland to ElectionLand.

The Scottish voter will be continually busy digesting the results of the last political campaign; or voting in the current campaign; or listening to the promises for the next campaign.

They will barely have time to notice that nothing is getting fixed.

    That's the entire point surely?

We can demonstrably assert the SNP regime have many failings, incompetence, dishonesty, authoritarianism, economic-illiteracy, etc, but even I'll grudgingly admit they're as good as anyone I've seen at pulling the wool over the electorate's eyes.
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

  • Do we need a new scotland thread? Something exciting needs to happen in Scotland.

Incidentally I'm going to Scotland this weekend to compete in the 'coast to coast' race.

I'll let you know how it's looking.
Left is never right but I always am.
  • I know North Ayrshire fairly well, along with several people who live there including Dreghorn. There is the small possibility I could know your Dad. Lol.

North Ayrshire AFAIK is still listed as a deprived area with a consistent high rate of long term unemployment, around 15% last time I looked. And it wasn't doing well according to Patricia Gibson in an online pre GE2015 election campaign speech, glumly talking about high Food Bank use and her deprived citizens in the 3 towns.

However I'm delighted to hear despite all the rhetoric, that things are much improved there , obviously in part thanks to the sharing of UK resource finances we have. Lol.

I hear from a housing point of view, much the same with housing has happened in Inverclyde, particularly in some deprived areas, largely due to significant EU funding in their case after their stock was taken over by Housing Associations.

Strangely every time I hear an SNP MSP or MP speak, there's normally a jibe at some other party or Westminser contained within it somewhere. With exception of Angela Constance, talking tonight about the introduction of new scoring assessments for reading and literature in our schools. But thought it was maybe because SNP central possibly felt she wasn't capable of pulling it off.

Yes North Ayrshire's been listed as one of the most deprived areas in Scotland for about the last 30-40 years now. The three towns, the Garnock valley and some other areas definitely still have pockets of severe deprivation. It's very tough especially for young people who don't go on to university or elsewhere after leaving school as there is little work other than in retail in some of the larger towns ( Irvine/Ayr). Certainly the huge industrial estates where I walk our dog daily ( but worked in when I was 18- 24 ) there's nothing left. There used to be what seems like 'armies' coming off buses between 5 and 8 in the morning back then to all the factories. But it is getting better.. especially with the much better transport services these days into Glasgow ( express buses/trains etc ) for the young ones seeking employment.

But I do have to admit, when I came back to Ayrshire, I discounted moving my family back to the Garnock valley, and opted for one of the larger towns instead.

As far as education is concerned. I don't think Scotland is doing too badly at the moment, overall. I suspect you're just nit picking. Again, I have no idea what Labour or the Conservatives have to offer in terms of Scottish education. Care to shed some light ?
Scotland is the best educated country in Europe, according to a report released by the Office for National Statistics.

It says that nearly 45 per cent of people in Scotland aged between 25 and 64 have had some kind of tertiary education – including university degrees and further education — ahead of Ireland, Luxembourg and Finland, which were the only other countries to get more than 40 per cent.
“In terms of the proportion of the population going into higher and tertiary education, Scotland actually has just about the highest in the world,” ONS chief economic adviser Joe Grice told ITV News.

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

which political party can one reasonable credit the education of people now aged between 25 and 64?

Yes, the same goes for the SNP. Mcskinflint was saying that the SNP should be justifying all sorts now, that may or may not be in their manifesto. New powers ? We should know what all parties are offering on them before choosing where to put the X in the box. Would Labour raise or lower Scottish taxes, or keep them the same ? It would be good to know !

After 2016, there won't be another election until the General election in 2020. If it looks like the Tories will get in with a resounding majority and the opinion polls for independence climb to around 60%... there will be a snap and very quick referendum ( none of this 3 year lead up next time ) on independence before 2021 and the next Holyrood elections. But both need to happen though. Only Corbyn as things stand can possibly prevent either. Bringing ex-Labour voters in Scotland back to Labour... and doing the same as the SNP did in Scotland with his 'grass roots' and young people ground swell continuing to build.
