For me this is one of the main problems with modern politics.

There is more talk about "how the other parties would perform even more poorly" than there is about "how we can outperform the others".

Right now, the SNP have opportunities they have never ever had, even though they are part of the Union.

They can raise taxes; they can make their NHS more efficient; they could support business to attract more work.

I say this with 100% honesty and conviction : if the SNP manage to turn around to the rest of the UK and say "we don't need as much from the Barnet formula now, we have boosted our income ourselves and are more self reliant" ; then I would have the utmost respect.

All of which are powers which lie in the future.. ( the tax raising powers available now are next to useless, and raising it for one band means it's raised across the board also. ). Taxes at the moment go to the UK Treasury, which in turn dispenses the block grant.. it's a loop/cycle which means 'boosted income' only goes straight to the UK treasury as things stand. Limited scope there.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

I thought the Herald was a terrible bunch of oiks that weren't to be trusted. I'm fairly sure that's been your position until quite recently.

    I paraphrase of course.

That was just one of the many links and reports on this poll from Twitter. Would you prefer Mike Smithson or TNS themselves ? Does it matter ? The Herald ARE still a bunch of oiks.. starting to realise which way the wind is blowing though...

A NEW poll has predicted that a clear majority of Scots would vote for independence, if a second referendum were held tomorrow.
When asked by TNS how they would vote if another referendum took place tomorrow, 47 per cent said they would vote Yes

Maybe the SNP need to put more money into maths teaching.
If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.

Evidence that UK still invests and has faith in Scotland.

Stop being so negative! You seriously underestimate the resources currently available.

There's a real mood about now to give local super councils more power.

    Use it.

The SNP voted against tuition fees. It was Scottish Labour MP's that voted to implement them in England.

Of course the SNP voted against tuition fees and the savings to state expenditure that resulted.

    Proves my point really.

    Thank you.

No, perhaps it's yourself talking poll results out of context that's the problem ?
With don't knows excluded, Yes is ahead by 53 to 47 per cent.
A second poll in little more than a week predicting that a majority of Scots would back independence...
^^^^^ That one's from the Herald. Not the SNP.

Scotland is still part of the UK. You can't seperate 'UK' and 'Scotland' in those sort of terms at the moment. As if they're different entities. Because they're not, even if it suits you to keep switching between the two.

And is hardly being negative pointing out the bald truth that whatever Scotland ( as part of the UK ) raises or 'boosts' in terms of the economy.. the revenues aren't Scotland's ( since it is part of the UK ) to do what they like with. They go into the UK Treasury. The block grant get's allocated to deal with/pay for devolved matters, that's it. And it's there that differences can be make in terms of priorities re the NHS/Education/Policing etc. But very little in that list is 'income producing'. The vast majority in terms of economic matters, for Scotland, are reserved. As such, any income 'boosting' goes to the UK---> which allocates the block grant..... and so it goes on in a loop.

Am not entirely sure what your point is to be honest. Are you saying you'd have welcomed the SNP ( about 6 MP's back then ) voting FOR tuition fees ? *puzzled*

I hope you have a good time!

    ..............

Enjoy - but I trust you'll not be cycling in front of me when I'm driving to Oban..... :( .

    WR

Oh, oh! Mistermeaner - I've just had a look at the route - you will be cycling towards Tyndrum while I am trying to drive through there to get to Oban for a ferry! (Watch your back....:D)

All joking apart, please be careful! The roads can be quite narrow with blind bends. We were going along that road this time last year - again, going to Oban to catch a ferry - and the same/a similar event was on - there seemed to be miles of cars, buses and HGVs that couldn't overtake and after we reached the Green Welly at Tyndrum, there was an announcement that the road was blocked to the south of Tyndrum in both directions due to an accident, which we later found out included a fatality:(

Have you been on that route north to Fort William before? The scenery can be quite fabby if the weather allows you to see it....

Not been on any of that before - I assume as we're doing an official race that the roads will at least be controlled if not closed? Also the maps don't show it but quite a bit of the work is offroad (although that tends to be running or kayaking)

Certainly looking forward to getting sloshed in Glencoe at the end of it.

We;re camping on the beach in Nairn the night before and then in a field near fort Augustus at the end of day 2. Taking plenty of bug spray!

    Enjoy your weekend too
Left is never right but I always am.
