New Alcohol self help

I hope everybody is well. I am still basking in the sun enjoying my new house. I sometimes can't really believe that all this is happening to me. Despite me not drinking for so long I still have a feeling of unworthiness lying deep inside of me. Perhaps one day I'll get over it and feel like everybody else seems to feel. Just think I might never have taken drink and maybe would have arrived at the same spot with the same feelings and had no one to talk to about it. Sometimes I feel it was worth all the pain to have the "support" that I now have. Then I say to myself "just enjoy what you have and don't fantasise. drink very near killed you."
Isn't life funny, I didn't start out to say most of above.
I suffered from low self-esteem for many, many years so understand completely that inner feeling of unworthiness.
But it wouldn't go away by itself, I've done a lot of work on it over the years and though I still get the occasional 'twinge' I now know how to deal with it.
I can recommend a system based on a self-esteem course that has worked wonders for me over the past 5 years or so. I won't post a link though if anyone is interested please PM me and I will give you more details.
I think low self-esteem is very common and is at the root of a lot of problems people have and can create extremely destructive patterns of behaviour. I'm so thankful I found a way out that worked for me.

Thanks MJDH it is always good to know that I am not alone with my feelings. I too do not suffer in the way that I used to. It has taken a lot of work and effort to get to where I am now. What always surprises and disappoints me is that every time I think I'm "cured" from low self esteem it raises it's head and says "hello".Something Really Interesting0

i want to do it - I think - for liver, weight and money reasons.
Can anyone help. I haven't been to my GP yet, a bit embarassed about how much I drink (bottle of red wine a day). Also OH nagging me to stop and I can't bear to tell him I'm considering it.....0 -
I empathise with you...same problem.Easily bottle of wine or more per evening.Put it down to my life.Son suffering from schyzophrenia, loss of my mother 2 years ago, younger brother almost 8 yrs ago, brother in law 2 months ago.Break up of my son`s relationship 3 yrs ago resulting in him coming back home.(So 2 grown up sons at home).Looking after grandson for half the week `cos his dad lives with us.OH suffering from high blood pressure, cholestrol.Myself on antidepressants.Financial problems, daughter getting married after Christmas abroad and we are unable to go.She and OH
prepared to pay for us to go but we can`t even afford renewal of our passports, never mind spending money and money for wedding outfits. Not looking forward to Christmas this year as really don`t know how we are going to manage this year.0 -
Hello to both of you,
You're very brave to come here and ask for help. But niw you need to be a little braver and ask the people in your life who can suppoirt you to do so. You won't get medical advice here but you already know that the amount you're drinking isnt good. Not good for your liver, your weight or your wallet and its making you feel bad about yourself.
Please, please go to your GP for an initial chat. THere's nothing they havent heard before. Be honest wirth him or her. Tell them about your fears as well as the facts. It might be a ood idea to book a double appointment so they can spend a bit of time with you - there's NO NEED to tell reception why you want a double appt but they are professionals too and would NEVER gossip about you. Never.
Ask your GP about what support there is in your local area. There are often support groups, local counsellors who can help you make your mind up & then live up to your promises to yourself. They can help you decide what to tell your family & how to do it.
And look for alternatives. If the problem is nothing to do in the evening then honey you need a project. Volunteer. Visit friends. redecorate the whole house. Go to yoga. ANYTHING that stops you slumping in front of the telly.
Really, good luck to you both. Please let people here know how you're doing - there's a whole support community for you. But dont avoid the real life support you need too. Go and ask for help. It can get better.0
