Does anyone know how long I need to keep bank statements for? It is all online now but I have a bagfull of old statements in a cupboard in case they are needed.
I don't get bank statements, nor do I have most utility bills in paper form, as they are all online. I do copy them, and the bank and credit card statements every month, and keep a back up copy in a separate place. Our water supplier and local authority are both looking to change to online accounts, so I hope pdf files will be accepted like paper records eventually, if they aren't already.

Several years ago now, my friend's elderly mum had to open a bank account when her husband died, to have her pension paid into. She had no passport, having never been abroad, no driving licence and the utility bills were all in her husband's name. The bank wouldn't accept her very old marriage certificate as evidence. I think the manager tweaked it in the end because her daughter had an account with the bank.
  • So sorry Carolbee, hugs and sympathies.

I'm looking for more things to go in a CS bag and really struggling. Cut some crochet patterns from magazines, 10 pages instead of 4 v thick magazines (but they go into the recycling not a CS bag). I'll need to start opening cupboards and drawers! What a friday night ;)

I have an apartment in France, and a couple of years ago I started to send the tax documentation to my accountant over there online, instead of paying out for silly amounts of postage. I send as pdfs and jpgs, and its fine.

Since we can submit our tax here online, and get a pdf of what we submit, I'm sure they'll be doing the same here soon. When I started to buy the place ten years ago, France was in the dark ages online, as far as I was concerned - but they've really caught up, and they surpassed us at one stage, though its about even now.

  • Not much Kondoing going on here, showerroom refit in full swing though. We are actually using the bathroom which hasnt been used for years! getting through my stock pile of hotel toiletries, although some of them arent any good so Im thinking of chucking and buying some nice bubble bath. Do you think anyone would want them?

I started reading the minimalists website and got very depressed as Im working in a department which is and has been undergoing restructures for years and am at possible threat of redundancy, I hate all the politics and would dearly love to give it all up and move to the seaside. However I have two kids, a husband who is at college doing a degree ( and not working) and four inlaws who are getting frailer and need more help each year.
Plus thanks to konmarie I dont even want to get involved in christmas. I enjoy the run up (in December) but the actual day is so depressing. I get crap presents and have to spend the day being nice to my in laws

(((( 0 )))) mothershipton. You have a lot going on and it soumds like you are taking it all on yourself. There's no subtle way to suggest this, and please forgive me if you've already talked about it, but many (all?) students do some paid work as well....... and they can certainly help support aged rellies, and indeed the children.
I too am at risk of redundancy but I am in the fortunate position of having no mortgage (the benefit of having a tiny house, bought years ago) and a DH who is working, albeit that he is on a low wage. I hope your work situation becomes clearer and less worrisome soon.

Can you kondo some of the responsibilty (not suggesting you throw the kids out!), maybe encourage the inlaws to get a few hours a week of domestic or personal help. Maybe they could ask for a social services needs assesment if they are struggling with personal care?

on the subject of xmas presents, yes it is disappointing to get rubbish presents, but some of them will be from people who meant well so take the sentiment and re-gift the gift! I told my brother and SIL to stop sending us presents after they sent us a salad bowl one year:rotfl: We buy for their kids and enjoy seeing them open the presents. As has been discussed before on here, perhaps suggest this to family, no more pressies for adults, just buy for the kids. You save money and so do your rellies. Probably too late for this year but perhaps moot it now, rather than after you get a naff pressie, to avoid any offence being taken? ;).

Hope your day, and our fellow kondo-ites, has some joy in it.

... or if you can't stop people buying you presents, maybe ask for a donation to a favourite charity in your name?

I've just put away my summer clothes since winter is clearly here and work trips for the next couple of months are to places that are likely to be properly cold. The contents of the charity bag are increasing with things I haven't worn this year, because they no longer suit my style. Having changed from a 5-days-a-week office job to a 'mostly home, otherwise travelling' job a few years ago my needs have changed, and the stuff I used to wear for the old job isn't needed for the new one and hasn't transitioned to my non-work wardrobe (with a few exceptions).

Given that the house is going to be in complete upheaval for months (or more likely years), having less stuff rather than more to move around will make life a lot easier.
