I do like most people enjoy the day with family, nice food and the trimmings but it's just the constant bombardment of adverts and company's playing on our emotions to spend spend spend that I hate.

Exactly how I feel. I enjoy a few festive activities in the run up to Christmas - meal out with some long term girl friends, school concert in cathedral, family time and some lovely winter festive fare. But I send very few cards - maybe about 6. Hate the thought of a Christmas Shopping trip and resent being bombarded with greed and consumerism. Gifts are only bought for our children and a Secret Santa to the value of £10 for mentioned above meal out. OH and I dont buy each other anything with the exception that I will get a ball of string from OH ( long story) and I will get him either a book or something small useful and inexpensive!

Christmas is not allowed in our house until I finish work for the Christmas break with the exception of the advent candle:D

:) I'm all in favour of visiting with family and eating lovely food, and the odd sherbert or two. And I positively love putting up the tree, decking the mantle and switching on the fairy lights on Xmas even (which will be the evening of the 24th as I have to work that day).

What I don't like is seeing Xmas cards on sale as early as July, as I have done for the past several years and Xmassy edible things being offered for sale months before (and with BB dates before Xmas).

Commerce is taking a lot of the specialness from the season and spoiling it, IMO.

Went into the shopping area and it was heaving, as it has been for the past two Saturdays, with traffic queued back from the carparks and a lot of fraught-looking people about. Apart from giddy teens, no one seems to be feeling the lurve.

:p I took the library books back and spent a whole 10p on a book I've been after for 2 years now, which has made me happy. When it's read, it's off into the donation bag to give pleasure to another reader.

Couldn't agree more. We have much the same sort of Christmas that you describe GQ. My DD1's birthday is on 20th so traditionally I've used that as a deadline for getting the tree and few decs up.

What I loathe most of all is all the 'stuff' that's in the shops. I'm NOT spending the rest of the year following MK's principles just to fill my home with 'stuff'!! Our family and more recently my friends have all decided to stop gifts and do experiences instead. So family (except children) don't get gifts but get together and enjoy food and good company. Friends we tend to go out to eat or the theatre or a day out but not at Christmas.

Decided to part with the electric steamer that I never use. I'm ashamed to say it went in the bin although in working order as it looked a bit tatty (hard water marks) and I've seen loads gathering dust in some CSs and others won't take electrical. Did take 2 large bags to CS though.

Springdreams I love Christmas as well, I do send lots of cards and do presents, I've been Sifting through my rather large stash of stuff this afternoon. I think kondoing has made me realise I do tend to siege buy when I see a bargain so have an unfeasable amount of cards and paper to use over the next several years. Opps
I bought a lovey big bell decoration this morning, it will bring me joy.

Thank you for the PM lollyfin:A

Hope all are as well as can be. I'm still taking in the terrible news, so many things happened yesterday that put things in perspective and make you realise how precious life is.

Indeed. The odds are against that happening to any one of us, but if it *does* happen to you, its lifechanging, if not life-ending :(

I've kondoed some flour - learning a savoury crumble, baked in my halogen oven, chucked lots of herbs and seasoning in there, it was great :) Definite kondoing, not decluttering :j

No offence spring dreams I love Xmas, but to send cards to everyone at work would, be ridiculous! :rotfl:
I love receiving the cards etc. But honestly would rather people saved their money and my house cannot take the amount of cards as I have a huge family as well.

May God bless all those families affected by the Paris atrocities, why oh why can people not live their lives peaceably.

I adore Xmas my tree goes up around my hubby's birthday 2 weeks into Dec. Hubby lost his mum when he was 10 years old and loves the fuss my family make of it!
It's my turn to do Xmas lunch for 1 of my sisters' and her family after which we meet up with the rest at my brothers ,very boozy very happy, much love, my favourite time of year. X
Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.
  • Hugs to all who need them. Such awful things happening in our worlds small and large.

And congratulations to everyone whose kondoing is proceeding at speed :j And thanks to those who posted interesting and useful links.

I too enjoy Christmas, but keep it very low-key as I have no family nearby and 23rd December is the anniversary of my Dad's death.

Christmas cards I blutak to the living-room door so I see them going in and out. I try to cut down my list, but then a card arrives from people I don't hear from all year so I end up having to send them one anyway:( .

RL has intervened a bit, but here is my last 2 days' worth of Min's Game:

9- clay frog made on visit to pottery

11 - old newspaper (which the plant trays were semi-wrapped in)

  • Thank you Polly for giving so much information about funerals and for all the discussions on the subject. When I told OH what I wanted, I had mentioned that I didn't want to go slowly in a hearse and would rather just go in a normal car at normal speed but didn't think I could so am glad to find out I don't have to have a hearse. I will do some more research before I put it all into my will so instructions can be detailed to assist those having to deal with it all.

Managed to do some Kondoing today at last; glad things are still leaving the door (or will once the wind stops blowing hard enough to knock the bins over!) and are mainly from piles on my desk.

    Mins game day 8

1 half done crossword cut from newspaper months ago

    7 old shopping list
8 scrap of paper with phone no on it
