I started reading bits of this thread as a friend has been really inspired by it. It has at least encouraged me to do some clearing out/sorting/tidying which is good but I have come to the conclusion that neatly folding knickers is a step too far for me. I have sorted out Bras into one section, knickers in another etc and got rid of some truly awful stuff but I think that is my limit.
That said if it works for you , great!

Just quickly back on as I was going to say about photos

When my mum passed, my brothers and sisters dumped a huge box of photos on me, all old black and whites and I had the guilt thing about not throwing any out. Same with all our old family photos and there were a lot, well I am of that generation. 5 years I started to sort and write about the family history of my parents and their families and many photos went into a book that I made via blurb. I did the same for my own family, from birth to adult and again for my immediate family now. Dh did his family from birth to adult. So now we have books and we bought copies for us and for our 3 children

I still have photos in a large box but it is time to say goodbye to them and they will go this week, the good or relevant ones are all now recorded in books. I`ll light a candle and play some nice music because this is my past and I have lived in the present for a good 10 years and if truth be told then this is the only stuck bit for me. No-one else in the family would want them

Greenval, I put cut down boxes in a drawer for my undies, socks and tights. I don`t roll any knickers and my undies have been tidy like this for over a year
  • Thanks for all the comments and ideas about the photo,s. I will start again tomorrow.
I have been sitting here for 4 hours in my P.J,s and dressing gown while the plumbers sort out my heating. Everything has had to be flushed through and new parts put in. Why oh why did I agree to them coming on a Sunday.
But guess what the 2 men doing it kept remarking on how tidy and clean my airing cupboard was. They told me it's the tidiest they had ever seen. Whoop, whoop. Wouldn't have thought men would notice such things.
  • Thanks imho - will try that :-)

Just checking in to say I have kondo-ed all my nightwear and more than halved it. I'm going to do underwear next, I know I am going to have a lot of bras to thank and send on their way. They might look beautiful but the joy I get looking at them in the drawer is not worth it for the lack of joy I get when I actually wear them and they stab me with their underwires or make me look like 1990s Madonna with ice cream cones stuck to my chest! Once they are done I have promised myself a little browse on the bravissimo website...

Amazon must be flooded with trade in books - just ran about 30 cookery books through it and hardly any were wanted - sorry Jamie O, nobody wants you ;)

Will wait a few weeks and see what happens.

I do worry when I see posts about people throwing away things belonging to other family members without their permission. This reminds me about some things that I no longer have due to this.

    1. A dolls house which was made by my dad. It was given away by my mother to my cousins as soon as she felt I was too old for it. I remember visiting my cousins and seeing some of the contents in their toy box whereas I never separated them. I never saw the dolls house again - I always wanted to ask my aunt what happened to it, but I think the answer would make me sad so I never have. I since have had two daughters who would have loved to have played with it.

My father died when I was 8 - I have nothing else that he made. It was unique and made out of a barrel. I have no photos of it.

    2. A hat which I made at school. I kept it on top of the wardrobe to keep it safe, and one day it had gone.

    3. A suit which a boyfriend had bought me when I was 14 and for some reason my mother didn't like it. I gave it to a girlfriend to look after, she sneaked it back to me for one day - I do have a photo of it somewhere. Unfortunately the girl became my stepsister and once our households were merged my mother must have found it again. I never saw it again.

I think MK is very clear in her book that you shouldnt kondo other peoples stuff and that she feels guilty about throwing away things that belonged to her siblings when she was little. I have read through the Mumsnet threads as well as this one (procrastination is my superpower!). It seems like people who have started kondoing their stuff and maybe just offering to fold their OHs stuff have ended up with OH quickly getting on board and wanting to join in whereas people trying to throw their OHs things away have then ended up with a lot of resistance to the whole idea.

Btw - 14 bras gone, 13 kept. Not sure about my little spending spree now as that still seems like a lot of bras. The only real gap in the collection is a nude t-shirt bra - not very exciting to shop for that though :-( I was hoping to have good reason to buy lots of the cute spring colours! Also, I'm struggling with the orphaned knickers from those decluttered bras - I should just chuck them right?

Very similar experience here too Frogeltina. In my case it was a grandmother who gave some of my childhood things away. I think this has been a contributing factor to me holding onto 'inconsequential' stuff. However I am getting better.........just put a red leather wallet out for CS that I must have had a s a student as it had my old railcard and NUS card in it - no idea why I was keeping it except I have a feeling either my mum or dad gave it to me from one of their trips abroad - they worked overseas for most of my early years.Anyway I felt no emotional attachment to it , no 'joy', so out it has gone:D
