Hmm - DH's project for next year is to knock the wall down between the kitchen & dining room so its open plan. We're doing this 'cos we don't use the dining room as much as we used to and its tending to become a dumping ground. Also, because the house faces west it will mean the larger room will be much brighter than it is now. My kitchen has tiles but the dining room has laminate and the hall has carpet. I'm toying with the idea of having the whole lot tiled - can't think of any particular drawbacks but I'd appreciate input from you Kondo-ites please:)Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

I have a kitchen diner, tiled throughout - this was done by the previous owners of the house. I have cursed the tiles in the kitchen many a time, as nothing survives being dropped! However, it is sooo easy to clean. I have a couple of Turtle mats in the 'kitchen' bit, expensive but well worth the money as they wash and wash, and a rather old Turkish rug in the 'dining' bit. The downside of tiles is that they can feel a bit cold/bare, but if you have a nice rug and some 'softer' curtains in this bit that will overcome that.
I spend 90% of my non-working time in this room, I do everything from sewing, bottling honey, rendering down beeswax, sowing seeds when it's too chilly outdoors, and of course cooking, baking, entertaining friends etc, it's my main route to the garden and the cat spends a lot of time in this room. The floor is really easy to clean. (Especially now I have got rid of the random bits of carp that used to litter it!)Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Well, we did a few jobs today, one of which was getting my reserved copy of the book from the library. I do have it on kindle but sometimes I need to feel the book in my hand. Does that make sense?!
Anyway on the way I dropped off some clothes at cash for clothes. Only 80p but it goes in our big old empty bells whisky jar. I have now took photo of old tapes and job lot of car boot stuff to put on eBay. Also went through some beads, I have kept some as I am determined when I have the house in an easier state to manage I can go back to my crafty bits that I really enjoy! I was going to have a car boot but it will be September at earliest and I want the things gone! Booked a stall at a local schools Xmas fayre in November.
Got another shelf free under the stairs but it is the top one so need to put things on it that I don't use so often. Thinking of the board games that we use winter time and/or a box of bits that we use we when do our us caravan holidays of things we have found useful but tend to forget such as plasters, pack of cards, scissors, bottle opener! This means I will free up space in my room and I can put the stuff I need to sort through there where I can see it.
Still trying to think about where to put my books. Am waiting for a USB stick so can upload CDs I like onto it. It's a cute guitar one and I have used money from my clicking. I very rarely play them because I don't have time to just sit and listen. I want this time back after I have kd but can't justify having the cd. No wonder I had debt problems I honestly bought so much carp. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Off to superglue some broken bits before I start tea!Don’t put it down - put it away!

Thanks for that Polly - I've had tiles in my kitchen for 20 years so I'm used to them now!
I'll also be using the dining area for lots of other things too - I do like to do a bit of sewing and the light in the bay window is great. ( thinking of putting a window sear there with cupboards underneath for my machine & bits) Looks like its going to be tiles and rugs when the weather gets chilly!!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Our home is 1930's bay windowed terrace with all original internal doors & floorboards except for the bathroom & one room that had a fire in 2001. Upstairs & attic are stained rosewood, downstairs are all original clear varnished pine. We love it but it can be draughty in winter especially if the wind is coming down the chimney!2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Well I did my under stairs cupboard this week. Emptied everything out - loads of random Komono. Most of which has either gone to car boot with my dad or is in boot of car for charity shop. I have even painted the walls and used some of that whitewashed wood wallpaper on one wall. The plan is to use the remnant of carpet which is hanging around in the bedroom for the floor.
I must admit that I have bought a vase of flowers for the sill.:o
The space looked great. I put my office stuff in there. The only problem is that Uni daughter has put all of her stuff in there now.
At least my dining room is now clear of her stuff. I have been able to tidy and sort it. Yay!De cluttering Konvert.Getting there

In our old house we laid huge Italian terracotta tiles in the kitchen and matching but smaller tiles through the though-lounge-diner. Beautifully cool underfoot in the Summer and even ok in the cooler months! We had two large woollen Turkish carpets/rugs - 1 in the dining room, 1 in the lounge. The tiles were so easy to clean and looked so warm, due to their honey and terracotta colouring. Fab for potty training too!:rotfl:
In this house we have carpet in the lounge, dining room and the stairs landing and all bedrooms. Mainly in neutral light brown except all 4 kids rooms - they have coloured carpets according to personal preference. The kitchen currently has huge dark browny-black porcelain tiles in - horribly cold, horribly difficult to clean. Being replaced later in year when kitchen redone :T Hall and cloakroom have Karndean (sp?) in which looks like parquet flooring. Nice underfoot and v easy to clean. Family room and office currently have nasty laminate but will be replaced with real wood floorboards next year (hopefully) when those 2 rooms are redone. Our bathroom has loose-lay Karndean in - nowhere near as nice as the little tiles of Karndean in the hall. Main bathroom and DD's ensuite have 'splashproof' (hah!) laminate in with rubber seals in between each board (looks like ships decking and a lot nicer than it sounds!:D)
If you're going for solid floor tiles make sure you choose smooth ones if you want them to be easy clean - ie: no little ridges in the pattern - and also make sure the grout level is high enough, or stuff (dirt) gets trapped in itI am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -

I'll second that. My bathroom floor tiles are a pain. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks very much for the tips on the tiles. I am very lucky as DS2 is a professional tiler so he will be laying them. I have seen some that look like woodgrain and DS can lay them in a herringbone pattern but TBH I'm still at the looking at ideas stage. Although he can give good advice on type etc he never has to clean them!!!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0
