My DD lives in Southend, she is at university there.
I come from the Isle of sheppey, which is just across the water from Southend - yet I had never been unti she went there last year. My accent is very much "Estuary" though....
My OH just said "I think I might start collecting...."
He didn't get any further was my "NO" was rather loud :rotfl:
I'm from Sittingbourne, went to secondary school for 4 years on Sheppey.Carolbee0 -
Yey I'm another Essex girl! For those of you emptying old cleaning products down the sink I would kindly ask you to reKonsider this. I gave up most nasty chemicals years ago because of my animals and after reading about all the awful things that end up in the oceans, the fish and then the ocean animals that eat them and yes you if you eat fish. Plastic tiny beads from beauty products was one which particularly stuck in my mind.
Some very astute observations here about the effects of Kondoing on your insanity! I lay in bed some nights thinking about a particular drawer that is irking me now lol! Just as I felt I was getting somewhere at the weekend, like peeling an onion, one big victory clear out merely unearthed another layer of things I had completely forgotten existed....
Although I'm not particularly expecting to pop my clogs anytime soon, you never know, and I would hate for my family to have to clear out all my Krap. Can just imagine them agonising over some God awful ornament they thought I loved cos I'd had it so long when actually I hated the same thing! I've told them I don't care about anything in my house unless it has a heartbeat. They can skip the rest after they've had anything they WANT (not they think they should keep) and let my friend who runs a cs have a rummage!Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!

Blimey :eek: did you? :eek::eek:
Most Sheppey people try to go to secondary school in sittingbourne!!
I went in the days of if you passed 11 plus to go to grammar from Sheppey you travelled over, and if you passed to go to Sheerness Tech you went from Sittingbourne to Halfway, then went to first year of Comp
All those kids backwards and forwards ....Carolbee0 -
Juliebunny, good point about disposing of cleaning stuff responsibly. I try and use 'green' products ow, but still have a legacy of older ones, I was planning to use them up rather than bin them (another of those moral dilemmas about whether it's better to use or chuck!)
Your comment about the ornaments made me laugh. We had exactly that after my parents died; they had a lovely china cupboard which was full of tat, frankly! We had no idea whether my mum loved them (she had quirky tastes) or just kept them because someone brought them back as a holiday souvenir and she didn't like to throw them out. Most of it went to the CS.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -

Afternoon All - for those of you who are thinking about what happens for your 'stuff' when you're no longer around. I met a man while I was doing a digital photography course just after I retired. He was in his early 80's and had lost his wife the year before. We got friendly & he lived round the corner from me & I visited a couple of times to give him a hand with his computer. His wife collected dolls, candles & Disney stuff all of which was lovingly cared for by him (no children) . He died about 18 months later & a few weeks after his funeral I saw all the dolls etc in a house clearance shop - it really upset me as I knew how much they all meant to him but it did make me realise that one person's treasure is another person's carp!!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Ouch. That's how it is, though! We cherish things for the associations they have for us, but those associations aren't transferred to others. I loved the comment above (was it Juliebunny?) about not caring about anything in the house that doesn't have a heartbeat ... when all is said and done, that's what is important.
I have just attacked the under-the-stairs cupboard, I made a first pass some weeks ago when I cleared the floor and rediscovered a gold ear stud that I had thought was lost for good. Amazingly, the floor has stayed clear. Today I tackled the shelves: result, one empty plastic crate, and several feet of clear shelf space. I still don't quite understand how it works, as I have only thrown away a few things (shoe polish that had Died In Storage) and repackaged a few others. The tool-boxes need a separate Kondo session all of their own but that's for another day. This cupboard is fast transforming from somewhere I was scared to open the door, to a useful storage facility (apart from the fact that nobody larger than a six-year old can use it without risk to their spine).Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
:T Just found another couple of kitchen items which can go, and am having a think about some more things in the same cupboard. I don't have a lot of kitchen stuff but it is a very small space so every item has to earn its keep, IYSWIM. And I took the opportunity to clear out the cupboard whilst it was temporarily empty.
Am now about to start another donation bag *quivers slightly with excitement* sad or what?:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Ah I'm glad I'm not the only one with a scary cupboard. I've actually got 2, one was sort of tackled but needs a 're-visit', the other one remains.....shudder...funny thing is though, the areas I have found really hard in previous clear outs haven't been as bad as expected since I became a Konvert. Did some difficult bits over the weekend....sentimental bits, old letters etc. That was hard and I felt drained. Didn't quite finish, just got to as much as I could cope with. I did however throw away 18 years worth of old appointment diaries. Turns out I'm not as attached to them as I thought. I started looking through the first one then decided it was time to look forward not back. Shredded the pages so I couldn't change my mind.
Found a home with a friends mum for some craft bits. Including a half done cross stitch.....the magazine with it was dated 1999!!!!!!
It's funny but at the start of my journey I would have been adamant that my issue was storage. Now I put each item of storage into the box room when emptied (or swappped for something smaller). I started to count them tonight but lost count at 20 items...........:pLess stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
