The KonMarie method

Hi Choosewisely
I gave myself the year to do this - and it will take that long.
But the things / rooms that are done are so lovely that it is inspiring me to keep going - even amongst the chaos of the rest.
We are at a particular stage in our lives - DD gone to Uni, DS finishing his GCSEs, OH looking to retire next year - where i think it is right to do this in order to move on. I was planning the great declutter of 2015 in any case, this method has made it achievable. And it has meant that others have bought into it.
I won't get much done at all (well, nothing) for the next two weeks as i am off overseas with work once more. I am going to Hong Kong and Singapore - whilst i realise it is something of a privilege, i would much rather stay home and continue this workI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Hi all,
This isn’t strictly kondoing but if I hadn’t read this thread I wouldn’t have learnt the magnificent art of Ranger Rolling.
We’re off to the Dordogne in the morning (middle of night to be more precise). As it’s just for the week and the forecast is hot hot hot we’ve decided to just take carry-on bags. Now I’ve always been good at packing light but never this good. Every item of clothing has been ranger rolled and it all fits in a medium back pack.
10 pairs of knickers , 3 pairs of socks, two dresses , one pair of trousers, 4 tops, beach towel, swim suit, 2 cardigans and a pair of sandals .
In fact it’s only two thirds full leaving plenty of room for toiletries and electronics etc. . . . I’m absolutely stunned.
For the record I’m not exactly sylph like so we’re not talking little scraps of material either0 -
I've also found packing - and unpacking - to be super speedy now!
Choosewisely, don't despair - I find I work best in short bursts with this, I haven't the time or energy to keep going constantly and I've learned from experience that it's better to clear one lot of donations/Freecycle/dump before creating another! I have visitors in a week or two and I am going to have to clear the spare room which is full of stuff which needs to go on its onward journey.
I was blessing MK this morning though. Unusually (I usually see clients in their homes) I had to see some clients here today, the only suitable room is my kitchen/dining room which is where I spend most of my time, so cue a mad panic to tidy up. Although I did still (shamefully) have to put a load of random Komono in a carrier bag to get it out the way, the job was much easier than usual because I have gradually been clearing things off the floor, dresser and worktops.
The worktops look so nice now they're clear, I am determined not to put everything back!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
Not sure if I joined this thread before but if not hi! Just wondering if it's ok to join as I didn't like the book lol. Most of the methods I was doing already, such as asking myself if items made me happy or not and I guess I'm decluttering in a similar way
over the last few months we were filling up a spare rooms with boxes to donate to charity. Then I put my car as SORN so we couldn't drive to the charity shops. We continued adding the boxes and decided to put it on eBay so that they could be collected. In the end a boot saler paid £150 for a big pile of boxes!
I have just listed some of my old university textbooks on ebay and so pay the auctions are up to £180. I got a lot of them for free too so very money saving.
As much as I'd like to just get rid of stuff quickly we need to pay off debts so this is really helping!Misc debts - £5,000 | Student loan - £9,000 | Mortgage - £180,000

And a jar of peanut butter - half a teaspoon of each = instant snickers
NOW you're talking!
I bought a large jar of Mr M's peanut butter a couple of weeks ago and it had gone in a week, via a teaspoon! I never, ever fancied it on bread, but started buying it to make hummous, as it was cheaper than tahini, and loved it when I tasted it neat! Luckily it's fairly low-carb, so it doesn't add to my weight, if I'm reasonably disciplined, ie don't eat a whole jar at one sitting! :rotfl:
After all the comments, I'm now afraid to buy Nutella - it probably has more carbs!choose_wisely wrote: »
I am now into my 4th month of this project and have no realistic hope of finishing before Christmas, especially with my youngest's job finishing in two months and the prospect of her returning home with the contents of a two bedroomed flat.
Well done to all those who are close to achieving the goal and good wishes to those who are finding it hard going.
Welcome back! :coffee:
Don't worry, I'm another unlikely to fonish before Christmas too!
When I moved here 26+ years ago, I didn't even have a bed to sleep in! Now the house is packed with all the excess that has sneaked, in unnoticed! I'm aiming at getting rid of a minimum 50%, but won't be surprised if it's closer to 80%. Shame my stamina isn't what it was all those years ago!
Been a very busy week (for me) with 4 appointments, interrupting the kondoing. Still, I got another full BFL of books away this morning to charity.
I am getting sick of my slobby house clothes that I've kept - some baggy sweaters and 3 baggy jeans. I have lost weight and am 2+ sizes smaller, so I can get the jeans on and off without undoing them, especially as the elastane has died over the past 10 years of constant wear! :rotfl:
I'm not feeling joy, just misery, every time I put these things on. I gues it's time to thak them and send them on their way.
Just hope I still have something (other than smart casual) to wear in the house/garden!
My tolerance of carp is continuing to decrease substantially and I just want all this (and other carp) out of my life!Needs, NOT wants!

I've just picked up "the book" from my library  It took over 3 weeks to come in on the "suggested" reading list, so it's brand new. Cost 40p.
First glance through scares me :undecided
This is going to be some weird and wonderful journey....reading this thread has really inspired me but now I'm here at the starting point - I'm TERRIFIED :eek:0
