Aww clutterfree hope you feel brighter soon, it is hard dealing with some of these things.
I am not sure there will be much left in my kitchen by the time I have finished the food category! It has really been an eye opener, am very keen to only have things we will actually eat, and only enough to last a week or two. It is quite stressful to me knowing that he freezer is full of food that has been there for months because when I fancy something specific for this week there is no room. There is definitely a theme which I didn't realise before of buying what I ought to have in rather than what we actually eat, like everyone says you should have tinned tomatoes and tinned beans ( not baked, they won't be leaving!) and fresh veg. I know a lot of my tins and spices etc were there because of the cookery books I love ( but don't really use) telling me this is what a well equipped kitchen has. Also the fresh veg, feel guilty not having it but also guilty if it goes off because we haven't eaten it. Think I will try only buying a little salad and carrots. The rest of the veg I will buy frozen (after eating what is already in the freezer!)
Sounds daft but am coming to realise there is quite a lot in the house like this, bought and kept because I felt it was what you should have rather than what I need, and that I would somehow be missing out if I didn't have it.
I have a friend who only owns a small amount of stuff, no books because she doesn't read, hardly any music, no nik naks, only food they will eat for the next week, and spends her money on the gym and days out with her son, cinema etc, doing rather than having, I am aiming towards that, while keeping the things I do love. Sorry for the long post, it all just came out! :)

Clutter free - your post on jewellery resonated with me. I had my mum's wedding ring and my grandfathers signet ring - both well worn but with enormous emotional attachment. My own wedding ring was also showing signs of wear & I had a LB moment and took them to a local jeweller who used the gold from all three rings to make me one new one. It certainly gives me joy and will be passed on to DGD who wants to do the same.
Greent - been getting rid of lots of pots too but now need to sort all the plastic ones - the bottom of the garden had become a dumping ground and I'm gradually getting it sorted and tidied. Doesn't it give you a great sense of satisfaction to see order and neatness instead of a messy jumble ;)
    Have a good day all

    Morning All,

Well I've Kondoed my jewellery and now have a drawer in my dressing table dedicated to jewellery.

Previously I had costume jewellery in a box, cheap stuff in my jewellery box and sentimental and more expensive items and silver in an anti-tarnish jewellery roll which I had hidden in case of break ins.
The problem with that was that I rarely wore any because it was too much hassle to get to.

Well I've finally gone through it all. I have a pile of cheap gold jewellery from my teenage years to be cashed in (never done that before), my costume jewellery is in a box in my new drawer, my necklaces are in shallow trays (lids from beauty boxes) my gold and silver jewellery is in my jewellery box which is also now in the drawer rather than cluttering up the surfaces. The only things left in my hidden jewellery roll are my engagement and eternity rings and my late step mums engagement and eternity rings and a few sentimental items from her.

It was lovely going through it all because there were some lovely items that I had forgotten I had! These are now all accessible so will be worn.

I inherited all my step mums jewellery. She died two and a half years ago and it was the first time I had properly gone through it all. She was a Snoopy lover so there were several Snoopy necklaces. I kept 2 for sentimental reasons and the rest will be cashed in. Also a few other things that I'll never wear have gone in the cash for gold pile. It was harder to discard her jewellery than it was my own because I didn't like to feel I was going to make money from her items. :o I'll never wear them though.

The hardest thing of all to discard was her watch. It wasn't expensive and was pretty battered and she hadn't worn it in years but she was wearing it when we first met and for many years afterwards so it was part of my childhood and teenage memories. It was too dated for me to ever wear now so I kissed it :o , thanked it for being part of our lives and giving her joy and popped it in the bin.
Crying again now so shall close.
    Have a good day xx

Hi Clutterfree. It gets better I promise. I had to do this my Mum died 4 years ago and I got all her jewellery my Dad had purchased everything for her over the years and TBH I dont think it was her style at all.She never wore any of it much.

So I kept it for a while (pre kondo) Then I cashed the whole lot in keeping one gold bangle which both mum and me loved.
It made £1500 and I spent every penny on a Necklace which I love it brings me so much joy and I never take it off.Everytime I look in the mirror I think my Mum got me this and I know she would be happy knowing I did what I did.
I really needed the money but couldnt bring myself to spend a penny of that money on anything else but my special Necklace.

Mum would also be pleased as I haggled the price down to my £1500 from £2000 and she would have loved that.

I am really tearful now but its happy tears maybe you could do something simalar or have a peice altered to something you love:)

It has really been an eye opener, am very keen to only have things we will actually eat, and only enough to last a week or two. It is quite stressful to me knowing that he freezer is full of food that has been there for months This is my problem too! I have got the fridge and my general grocery buying under control, by having a regual weekly list which doesn't change, except for monthly/or less frequent necessities. The freezer is in the process of being run down, and will operate on the same system, eventually.

because when I fancy something specific for this week there is no room. There is definitely a theme which I didn't realise before of buying what I ought to have in rather than what we actually eat, like everyone says you should have tinned tomatoes and tinned beans ( not baked, they won't be leaving!) and fresh veg. I think most 'housewives' start from this point! :(

I do this, and keep a few canned veg, in stock too. Incidentally, frozen veg is said to be fresher than 'fresh' veg!

Sounds daft but am coming to realise there is quite a lot in the house like this, bought and kept because I felt it was what you should have rather than what I need, and that I would somehow be missing out if I didn't have it.

Probably most of our excess? :o

Definitely, me too! I think you and I are on exactly the same plane! :D

I went through my jewellery, pre-kondo, and got rid of a lot of valueless tat that I never wear. The things I do wear fit into a small travel jewellery box! I shall have to give the rest another round. And I like your re-purposing idea - brilliant, thanks! :)

I've just cleared the ceramic pots, that I use for house-plants - now an empty space, with the washed pots re-homed to an empty wardobe shelf. But, with an up-coming Jumble Sale, I'm going to weed out half that I never use, leaving 3-4! :T

I loved this post, Mav! What a lovely 'living' memorial to your Mum! So JOYFUL!

Well done for using all the proceeds on this one lovely necklace and getting such a bargain price! Like mother, like daughter - she's probably rocking with laughter and saying "That's my girl!" :rotfl:

Went to the boot this morning, I still enjoy going and looking round but I'm so much more selective on what I buy. DD2 needed baby grows and vest for DGS he's 6 weeks old but already in 6/9 month size!! He's not fat just big. He was 9lb 9oz born and is now 14lbs. Got him 6 vests, got some fossils for school and a wire brush Dh needed, got a couple of DVDs to go with a bottle for my dad, and a bottle of bubble bath I love the scent of so not too much in At all.
Am persuading DD3 she needs to do a boot so that I ca. Give her some stuff to sell. She gets to keep the money but anything left will be taken immediately to the CS afterwards.
Did mils weeding and garden prep for the fence yesterday and Dh went in her garage and conceded that we will need to hire a skip for her as the garage needs a really good clear out. Once the France and the boiler are done that will be the next project for round there. It's too much for mil to cope with so we end up doing it all.

iQueen Thank you for your kind words :) I hope Mum does think that :)
At the time I did this I have a nagging feeling some so called 'Friends' Thought I should have kept everthing I was left and I was selfish and they could never sell any of it if they were in my postion.

They did make me doubt myself and also knowing some of that money should have been spent on bills to clear some debt.I know Mum would never had minded me paying bills with it but I really couldnt spend one penny of that money on anything else.

I have never regreted it for one second.I cleared my debt without using any of the money and knew I would.Spent every penny on something I love and remember my Mum every single time I look in the mirror.

The jealous (which I know now) friends have either been kondo'd or get my necklace rammed down thier throats everytime I see them :rotfl:

So a win win result for me ;)
