Would it be a bad thing to Kondo the kids?

It's a good job for him that he died in 1911, he would have hated to see how far one of the family farmsteads has fallen. That's a listed building, I'll have you know.
Grade 2 listed, I mean - it's also listing; the gables are going every which way like a can-can dancer on speed. It wasn't his grave I was possicking near, his side are in another churchyard, all of 1.5 miles away.Mum's people are from 200 miles away via a sojuorn in Lunnon so I'm only semi-inbred; you can't hurl a brick in that part of the region without hitting someone I share DNA with. Not that I'd recommend hurling bricks at my extended family, as some of them would hurl them back with extreme prejudice.:rotfl:
It's sad when listed buildings are left to disintegrate , I imagine it would take an awful lot of money to bring your great great grandads farm house back to lifeyellowbear wrote: »Would it be a bad thing to Kondo the kids?

sistercas, it's a farmhouse with all the land sold away from it and has stood empty for decades until it mysteriously flew afire one winter's night. Because buildings which have no power supply, and which have metal plates afixed over doors and windows to keep intruders out just tend to spontaneously-combust on dank rainy nights, you know?
Village gossip is the the owners torched it because they couldn't redevelop it as they wanted to, because of the listed status, and it would have been a money-pit to put right. We spoke in passing to the owner this aft - even though there's just the gables and rubble left, they're still not going to be allowed to knock it down and start again.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

In particular the gifts - my mother was a school teacher and every Christmas and end of school would see endless piles of ornaments, mugs and trinkets that people had spent their hard earned money on and which frankly she didn't really want - well not the items themselves, the gratitude that was intended to be conveyed made her very joyful.
She lives in a tiny town and couldn't have got rid of the stuff discreetly and used to bring boxes of it to where I lived to donate to the chazzers where I lived. It took us years to finally clear her cupboards of World's Best Teacher items.
I made a vow then that I would only give teachers edible or consumable gifts that they could either eat or bin and I would never know, anything as long as they didn't have to 'treasure' it on my behalf. I must try to apply that thinking to other gifting too unless I know that an actual thoughtful item really WOULD be appreciated.
Has to be one of the daftest ideas ever.
However I am ashamed to admit that I have been guilty of happily buying cat decorated presents for two cat-owning friends.:o0 -

Evening all. Have been away from the thread for a few days due to the busy-ness which RL sometimes brings
Having trouble typing as have just painted each of my nails a different colour ready for tomorrow (doing a Rainbow Run in Oxford) - seems a reasonable way to help DD use up her stash of nailvarnishes!
Beautiful weather here today - so OH and I decided to *do* the garage. Emptied it out (not the loft part, just the large double garage itself), swept the floor and put things back in tidier/ more organised, after considering whether it was to be kept. Have to confess that 'usefulness' was more of a measure than 'joyfulness' for many items, though. Much cardboard was taken for recycling. A long metal bit from a car, a towbar and a complete set of tools from an old car of mine have been put aside for the scrap metal people. 2 dining chairs have been offered on freegle, along with a black bag of plastic pots (pots will be recycled at garden centre if not freecycled). 2 boxes have been filled for charity shop (lots of ceramic pots from when we used to have lots of houseplants, a candle plate, a pair of hand-tooled brass candlesticks, a pestle and mortar, an unused set of travel sized bottles for decanting toiletries into, a Queen's silver jubilee mug from 1977, a new washbag, 4 hanging baskets, 4 hanging basket wall hooks (inc a new one with price tag still attached), lots of boxed/ sealed lightbulbs, a brand new sealed pack of bamboo canes and some other bits n pieces) Several items have been put aside s tombola prizes for a charity I volunteer for, along with several no-longer-required IKEA blue bags (much in demand at said charity), a pile of books has been put aside for charity and lots of children's toys have been sorted, cleaned and priced for a nearly new sale next month. About half a black bin of non-recyclable rubbish also sorted.
We still have to sort the trailer (full of camping stuff) and I have 2 boxes of 'bits' to sort (condensed from 5 boxes) All packaging for ebay items has been sorted (and there's loads!) and is now accessible. A box of ebay-able items has been found and will be listed over the next few weeks - which should use up some of that packaging lol
The garage is looking much tidier. Will start on the garage loft this week. Have several empty large plastic storage crates from discarding in the house and will transfer Xmas decs into them (currently in about 6 or 7 large house moving boxes.....) after considering their joyfulness - I know that there are several items (at least) in there which I do not like but which I have hung onto because they were gifts - well, they will be making their way to the CS very shortly!
Have discovered we have an excessive stash of alcohol in the garage - over 30 bottles of wine, 6 flavoured vodkas, a couple of liqueurs, 3 whiskies, 40 bottles of beer and lager, some WKD and some strawberry cider!!! Now sorted, organised and loose plans made for inviting neighbours over a few times to help us with it over the Summer!!
A decent achievement made today - best for a while. Nothing will be achieved KM wise tomorrow due to 5 of us attending the Rainbow Run (an hour or so's journey) and the 6th being away for the weekend on Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Easy food tomorrow night, methinks! Will aim to do some on Monday - maybe. Dried 4 loads of washing today, so there is a huge pile of ironing and house is just generally messy atm - not helped by DS3's birthday on Thursday of this week - new toys still around to find homes for! I do find it hard to keep up with general housework whilst in full on KM mode - and also need to spend some time with the 4 DC over half term!
Hope everyone has a lovely BH weekend

Hi folks, haven't posted for a while but have been reading along and cheering you all on!
Just popped in to mention a new Kondo success - DD has been diagnosed as coeliac so we've been kondoing gluten from the house - it seemed easier to make the house a gluten-free zone as there's only us two and it won't do me any harm to eat less wheat etc. I can still get my fix of Lidl bread at workAnyway it's been so easy to clean the kitchen up etc because I'd already kondoed and cleaned last month, it has really sparked joy that I had so little Stuff to deal with!
So it does work, and has all sorts of unexpected benefits, so to anyone struggling keep at it, it'll be worth it in the long run
By the way Mavvymoo I reckon your friend asked exactly the right person to help her out!

Morning All,
Well I've Kondoed my jewellery and now have a drawer in my dressing table dedicated to jewellery.
Previously I had costume jewellery in a box, cheap stuff in my jewellery box and sentimental and more expensive items and silver in an anti-tarnish jewellery roll which I had hidden in case of break ins.
The problem with that was that I rarely wore any because it was too much hassle to get to.
Well I've finally gone through it all. I have a pile of cheap gold jewellery from my teenage years to be cashed in (never done that before), my costume jewellery is in a box in my new drawer, my necklaces are in shallow trays (lids from beauty boxes) my gold and silver jewellery is in my jewellery box which is also now in the drawer rather than cluttering up the surfaces. The only things left in my hidden jewellery roll are my engagement and eternity rings and my late step mums engagement and eternity rings and a few sentimental items from her.
It was lovely going through it all because there were some lovely items that I had forgotten I had! These are now all accessible so will be worn.
I inherited all my step mums jewellery. She died two and a half years ago and it was the first time I had properly gone through it all. She was a Snoopy lover so there were several Snoopy necklaces. I kept 2 for sentimental reasons and the rest will be cashed in. Also a few other things that I'll never wear have gone in the cash for gold pile. It was harder to discard her jewellery than it was my own because I didn't like to feel I was going to make money from her items.I'll never wear them though.
The hardest thing of all to discard was her watch. It wasn't expensive and was pretty battered and she hadn't worn it in years but she was wearing it when we first met and for many years afterwards so it was part of my childhood and teenage memories. It was too dated for me to ever wear now so I kissed it, thanked it for being part of our lives and giving her joy and popped it in the bin.
Crying again now so shall close.
Have a good day xxAgeing is a privilege not everyone gets.
